Van sits on the eastern shore of Lake Van - Türkiye’s largest lake, an endorheic (landlocked) salt and soda lake of extraordinary electric blue colour, ringed by volcanic peaks. At 1,650m elevation and with a surface area of 3,755 sq km, Lake Van is one of the great high-altitude lakes of Asia. Van is the base for visiting Akdamar Island (a 35-minute ferry from the shore), home to the 10th-century Armenian Church of the Holy Cross - one of the finest surviving examples of Armenian architecture. Van Castle, the ancient Urartian citadel above the lake, and the Rock of Van complete the city’s main historical sites. Van is also famous for the Van cat - a white, often odd-eye-coloured cat breed native to the lake region.
