Afyonkarahisar - generally shortened to “Afyon” - is central Anatolia’s thermal spa capital. A medieval volcanic rock crowned by an Ottoman citadel dominates the skyline, while the surrounding plains produce Türkiye’s famous cream (kaymak), sucuk sausage and lokum. The city’s main draw for domestic tourists, however, is its cluster of thermal resort hotels south of the city at Gazlıgöl and Sandıklı, which rank among the best thermal spring facilities in the country. Afyon is a practical overnight stop between Istanbul (340km) and the south coast, and a destination in its own right for spa-focused domestic visitors.

Practical Booking Tips

Afyon’s thermal resort hotels are heavily booked by Istanbul and Ankara families on long weekends throughout the year. Advance booking of two to three weeks is advisable for any weekend stay. The Afyon cream (kaymak) and sucuk are widely regarded as the best in Türkiye - buy them at the old city market or the specialist shops on Millet Caddesi rather than at motorway service stations. The castle rock (İskender Hill citadel) requires a 30-minute uphill walk and is best visited in the cooler morning hours.
