Şanlıurfa (commonly called Urfa) is one of the most spiritually significant cities in the Middle East - traditionally identified as the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham. The sacred fish pools of Balıklıgöl (Abraham’s Pool), surrounded by mosque gardens and alive with the sacred carp that cannot be harmed, form the heart of the old city. The archaeological site of Göbekli Tepe, 15km northeast, is a world-altering discovery - a 12,000-year-old ritual complex predating Stonehenge by 7,000 years that rewrote the history of human civilisation. The UNESCO-listed old bazaar and the Haleplibahçe mosaic complex complete an itinerary of genuine world significance. Şanlıurfa rewards two nights and ideally three.

Practical Booking Tips
Şanlıurfa is a deeply conservative religious city - dress modestly in the old city and particularly around the Balıklıgöl complex. Ramadan is actively observed. Göbekli Tepe (entry approximately ₺200 as of 2026) is essential visiting - arguably the most significant archaeological site on the planet currently being excavated. Allow a minimum of two hours. The on-site museum provides excellent context. The Şanlıurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museum (entry approximately ₺150 as of 2026) holds extraordinary mosaics from the Harran period alongside artefacts from Göbekli Tepe - visit before the site itself to set the context. Summer temperatures in Urfa regularly exceed 42°C - visit in spring (April–May) or autumn (October) if heat is a concern.
