The Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu Yarımadası) is a narrow finger of land on the European side of the Dardanelles where, in 1915, Allied forces launched the disastrous Gallipoli campaign - a battle that killed over 130,000 soldiers and became a defining moment for Australia, New Zealand and Türkiye. The memorials, cemeteries and preserved battlefield sites across the peninsula draw visitors year-round, with the largest crowds arriving for ANZAC Day (25 April). There are two practical bases for visiting the battlefields: Eceabat on the European shore (closest to the main sites), or Çanakkale on the Asian shore (reached by 25-minute car ferry). Most independent travellers choose Eceabat; those using Gallipoli as part of a broader Çanakkale trip stay in Çanakkale.
