Erzurum is the largest city of eastern Anatolia - an altitude city at 1,890m, bitterly cold in winter and clear and fresh in summer. Its strategic position on the Silk Road left it an extraordinary concentration of Seljuk architecture: the Çifte Minareli Madrasa (twin minaret madrasa, 13th century), the Ulu Cami and the Üç Kümbetler tomb cluster are among the finest examples of medieval Islamic architecture in Türkiye. In winter, the Palandöken ski resort (8km from the city centre) draws domestic skiers. Erzurum serves as the gateway city for the eastern Anatolian circuit, with daily flights to Istanbul.

Practical Booking Tips

Erzurum’s winters are severe - plan accommodation with central heating as an absolute requirement from October through April. The Palandöken ski season typically runs December to March, with the resort operating reliably due to altitude and consistent snowfall. Summer in Erzurum (June–August) is clear, cool and pleasant at altitude - a good counterpoint to the heat of western Türkiye. The kadayıf dessert and the Erzurum oltu taşı (black amber/jet) carving are the city’s most famous local products, both available in the bazaar district.
