Ephesus itself is a ruins site - there is no accommodation within the ancient city. The nearest base is Selçuk, a small town 3km from the main Ephesus gate with an excellent selection of family-run guesthouses and small hotels. The village of Şirince, 8km east of Selçuk, offers a charming alternative in a restored Greek hillside village. Kuşadası, 18km away, is a large beach resort and cruise port with the widest range of hotels, though its commercial character is very different from the quieter Selçuk base. For most visitors who want to spend a full morning at the ruins before the tour buses arrive, staying in Selçuk is the practical decision.

Best Areas to Stay Near Ephesus
Selçuk town is the best base for Ephesus-focused visitors. The main gate of Ephesus is a 3km walk or short taxi ride (approximately ₺100) from Selçuk centre. The town also has the Ephesus Museum, the Byzantine Basilica of St John, and the ruins of the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, though only a single column remains). Evening meals in Selçuk are excellent and unpretentious.
Şirince village is the atmospheric alternative - the restored Greek houses, terraced vineyards and hilltop position make it one of the most charming villages in the Aegean region. The only drawback is that Ephesus access requires transport.
Kuşadası suits visitors combining Ephesus with a beach holiday. The cruise port brings thousands of day visitors daily in season, making the town itself busy. The beaches north of town (Long Beach) are good; the central town beach is less so.

Practical Booking Tips
Ephesus receives significant coach-tour traffic from approximately 09:30 to 14:00. Staying in Selçuk and arriving at the site gates before 08:30 (when it opens) allows a full two hours before the tour groups arrive - the most rewarding way to experience the ruins. The site entry fee is approximately ₺800 as of 2026. The Terrace Houses (Yamaç Evleri) require a separate supplement of approximately ₺400 and are worth paying for - they show Roman domestic life in extraordinary detail. The House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana Evi), 5km from the main site, is a pilgrimage site visited by popes; entry is approximately ₺200 as of 2026.
