Diyarbakır is the cultural capital of the Kurdish southeast - a city encircled by some of the most complete ancient city walls in the world, built in dark volcanic basalt and stretching 5.8km around the historic core. The walls are UNESCO World Heritage listed alongside the Hevsel Gardens, ancient irrigated gardens below the walls that have been continuously farmed for ten thousand years. The old city (Sur) is dense with bazaars, mosques, Syriac churches, Armenian churches and traditional stone-built merchants’ houses. It’s a complex, layered and genuinely extraordinary city to explore - one that demands at least two nights and rewards slower travel.

Practical Booking Tips

Diyarbakır’s old city suffered significant damage during unrest in 2015–16, and Sur district is in ongoing restoration. Some streets remain under reconstruction; check current access for specific neighbourhoods before booking old-city accommodation. The Diyarbakır watermelon festival (Karpuz Festivali, August) celebrates the famously large local watermelons - a genuine Diyarbakır export. The basalt city walls (entry approximately ₺100 as of 2026) are best walked in the cooler morning hours; the full circuit takes approximately 2.5 hours. Diyarbakır is a conservative city - modest dress is appropriate in the old city markets and mosque quarter.
