Dalyan is one of the most scenic small resorts on the Turkish coast - a river town where the Dalyan Çayı winds through reed beds and mud flats before reaching Iztuzu beach (the “Turtle Beach”), one of the most protected stretches of sand in Türkiye and a critical loggerhead sea turtle nesting site. The town sits directly opposite the extraordinary Lycian rock tombs carved 30 metres up a cliff face in the 4th century BCE. Staying in Dalyan means morning boat trips past the tombs, afternoon swims at Iztuzu, and evenings in a relaxed riverside town that has largely avoided large-resort development. It’s one of the most atmospheric small bases on the Aegean-Mediterranean coast.

Best Areas to Stay in Dalyan

Iztuzu Beach Area has a small number of seasonal guesthouses operating at the beach end, 9km from town. Staying here provides early morning beach access before the turtle beach fills (and closes at 20:00 in nesting season), but the isolated setting means limited dining.

Getting Around Dalyan

Dalaman Airport (DLM) is 25km from Dalyan; taxis cost approximately ₺400–550 as of 2026 - most hotels offer an airport transfer service. Marmaris is 70km west (approximately 1.5 hours by road). Practical Booking Tips

Dalyan operates a strict turtle beach protection regime from June to September - the beach closes at sunset and opens at dawn, and only designated sections are accessible during nesting season. Respecting this is essential; wardens are present and fines are issued. The mud baths on the way to Iztuzu are a thermal spring with natural sulphurous mud - boats from town include a mud bath stop for approximately ₺50 extra on the standard Iztuzu circuit. June and September are the sweetest months in Dalyan - warm enough to swim, less crowded than July and August, and the turtle watching programme (night tours) is active in these months.
