Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire and it retains an architectural legacy that puts it in a different category from most Turkish cities its size. The Green Mosque (Yeşil Cami), the Grand Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı), the Silk Market (Koza Hanı) and the Ulu Cami are all within walking distance of the city centre, while Mount Uludağ rises immediately behind the city offering Türkiye’s best-known ski resort in winter and hiking in summer. Where you stay in Bursa depends heavily on your purpose: city centre hotels suit cultural visitors; Uludağ lodges suit skiers; and the thermal resort suburb of Çekirge suits those combining history with relaxation.

Practical Booking Tips
Bursa sees a significant spike in domestic tourism during winter weekends when Istanbul residents visit Uludağ for skiing. Book ski-season accommodation at least three weeks in advance. Spring (April–May) is the best time to visit culturally - the Çekirge thermal gardens are blooming and the city centre is uncrowded. The famous İskender kebab (döner served on bread with tomato sauce and butter) was invented in Bursa and remains unavoidable; İskenderçiler restaurant near the bazaar serves the original. Bursa’s Grand Bazaar and Koza Hanı remain working commercial markets, not tourist-only reconstructions - visiting on a weekday morning gives the most authentic experience.
