Topkapi Palace Istanbul: Tickets, Hours & Visitor Guide (2026)

Topkapi Palace was the administrative and residential heart of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries, from its construction under Mehmet II in the 1460s until 1853, when Sultan Abdülmecid I moved to the new Dolmabahçe Palace. Today it is one of Turkey’s most visited museums, housing the imperial treasury, sacred Islamic relics including the mantle of the Prophet Muhammad, and the famous Harem - the private royal apartments where the sultan and his family lived.

Topkapi is not a single building but a series of courtyards, pavilions, and halls spread across a promontory at the tip of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, where the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the Sea of Marmara converge. Allow at least three hours; four if you include the Harem.

Tickets and Entry (as of 2026)

Main palace entry: approximately ₺1,200 per person (as of 2026). This covers the Second, Third, and Fourth Courtyards, including the Imperial Treasury and the Pavilion of the Holy Relics.

Harem entry: sold separately, approximately ₺600 per person (as of 2026). The Harem requires a dedicated ticket and entry at a specific time slot. Harem tickets sell out early in peak season - buy yours the moment you enter the palace grounds or book ahead via Tiqets.

Museum Pass Istanbul: Covers both the main palace and the Harem. If you plan to visit Hagia Sophia Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, and two or more other Sultanahmet sites, the Museum Pass typically pays for itself on the second site.

Tickets can be purchased at the palace box office or online. In July and August, box office queues can run 45–60 minutes. Booking online eliminates this entirely.

Opening Hours (as of 2026)

Topkapi Palace is open Wednesday to Monday, 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00). Closed on Tuesdays.

The Harem operates on timed entry; the last Harem session typically starts around 16:30. In peak summer season (July–August), the palace can be extremely crowded by 11:00 - arriving at opening is strongly recommended.

What to See

First Courtyard (Courtyard of the Janissaries): Free to enter. Contains the Byzantine church of Hagia Irene - one of the oldest surviving churches in Istanbul - and the Imperial Mint.

Second Courtyard: Reached through the Gate of Salutation (Bâb-üs Selâm). The large ceremonial courtyard where the Divan (imperial council) met. The Imperial Kitchens along the right side now display Ottoman porcelain collections, including a significant collection of Chinese celadon ware.

Third Courtyard: The sultan’s private domain. The Audience Chamber, the Library of Ahmed III, and the Pavilion of the Holy Relics are here. The Holy Relics section houses items attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, including his mantle and sword, as well as relics of Moses, David, and John the Baptist. Photography inside this room is not permitted.

Fourth Courtyard: The garden terraces with several kiosks and pavilions overlooking the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. The Baghdad Pavilion (1639) is the finest remaining example of Ottoman kiosk architecture. On a clear day the view from the terrace benches is exceptional.

Imperial Treasury: In the Third Courtyard. Contains the 86-carat Spoonmaker’s Diamond, the Topkapi Dagger (set with three large emeralds), and the Throne of Ahmed I. This room gets very crowded - visit early in the morning or in the last hour before closing.

The Harem: A complex of over 400 rooms where the sultan, his mother, wives, concubines, and children lived under strict hierarchy. Approximately 30 rooms are open to visitors, including the magnificent Imperial Hall (the largest room in the complex), the Dining Room of Ahmed III (lined with mother-of-pearl), and the apartments of the sultan’s mother. How to Get There

Topkapi Palace is in Sultanahmet, 5 minutes’ walk from Hagia Sophia and directly adjacent to Gülhane Park.

• By tram: Take the T1 tram to Sultanahmet or Gülhane stops. The Gülhane stop puts you at the First Courtyard entrance; the Sultanahmet stop requires a short walk around the palace walls.
• On foot from Hagia Sophia: The main gate (Bâb-ı Hümâyun, the Imperial Gate) is a 5-minute walk northeast across Sultanahmet Square.
• On foot from Eminönü: Walk east along the water through Gülhane Park. Approximately 15 minutes.

Booking Tips

• Buy Harem tickets immediately on arrival - they sell out before main palace tickets do. If you arrive to find the Harem sold out, you can often buy for the last available time slot and complete the other sections first.
• Peak season (July–August): Book online before you leave your hotel. Tiqets and GetYourGuide both offer skip-the-queue access and confirmed entry times.
• Shoulder season (April–May, September–October): Walk-in tickets are generally available without a wait.
• Audio guides: Available in English at the entrance for approximately ₺150. The Harem audio guide is particularly useful given the complexity of the layout.

Best Time to Visit

Earliest opening (09:00): The only time you can comfortably see the Imperial Treasury without being pressed against other visitors. The Harem at opening is also significantly quieter.

Late afternoon (16:00–18:00): Day trippers and tour groups begin leaving around 15:00. The Fourth Courtyard terraces are beautiful in the late afternoon light and often quiet after 16:30.

Avoid midday in summer: The palace courtyards have limited shade. Temperatures between the stone walls in July and August can be intense. Carry water.
