Türkiye Tourism Statistics: Visitor Numbers, Revenue & Travel Trends

Bustling Istanbul bazaar with crowds

Türkiye consistently ranks among the world’s top five most-visited countries. After a record-breaking 2019, arrivals collapsed during the pandemic and then recovered with unusual speed - faster than almost any comparable destination. By 2023, Türkiye had recorded 49.2 million international arrivals, its second-highest figure ever, alongside $54.3 billion in tourism receipts. Below we’ve compiled the key figures from TurkStat (the Turkish Statistical Institute), the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and UNWTO.

International Arrivals

Türkiye first crossed the 40-million threshold in 2014 and reached a then-record 51.7 million in 2019 before the pandemic dismantled global travel. The recovery from 2021 onward was exceptional: annual growth rates in the 50–60% range pushed the country back to near-record levels within two years.

YearInternational ArrivalsChange YoY
201951.7 million+13.7%
202015.9 million−69.2%
202129.9 million+88.1%
202244.6 million+49.2%
202349.2 million+10.3%

UNWTO ranks Türkiye 5th globally by international arrivals (2023 data), behind France, Spain, the United States, and Italy. For context, 49.2 million arrivals places Türkiye well ahead of China, Germany, and the United Kingdom in the same ranking year.

Tourism Revenue

Tourism receipts are measured in US dollars and reported by the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT). The sector is strategically important to the current account balance - tourism earnings help offset Türkiye’s persistent trade deficit.

YearTourism ReceiptsAverage Spend per Visitor
2019$34.5 billion$667
2020$12.1 billion$761
2021$24.8 billion$830
2022$46.3 billion$1,038
2023$54.3 billion$1,104

The sharp rise in per-visitor spend from 2021 onward partly reflects a weaker Turkish lira making Türkiye an exceptionally good-value destination for foreign currency holders, driving longer stays and higher discretionary spending on food, accommodation, and tours.

Tourism contributes approximately 10–12% of GDP in high-season years and accounts for around 7–8% of total employment when including supply-chain roles (transport, food production, retail).

Top Source Markets

Germany has been Türkiye’s largest inbound market for most of the past two decades, driven by a large Turkish diaspora community and well-established charter routes. Russia fluctuates between second and third depending on geopolitical conditions; arrivals held up better than many expected in 2022–2023 despite the war in Ukraine, as many Russian travellers continued to use Türkiye as a hub.

The UK ranking reflects the strength of low-cost carrier connections (especially easyJet, Jet2, and TUI) and a long-standing beach-holiday market in Antalya and Bodrum. Bulgaria’s high position is due to land-border day-trippers, who inflate raw arrival counts.

Most-Visited Destinations

Istanbul dominates by a wide margin, handling roughly 20 million international visitors annually - a figure that puts it in the same tier as Paris and Barcelona. Antalya is the second hub, functioning primarily as a resort gateway: its airport is the fourth-busiest in Europe by summer passenger traffic.

DestinationAnnual Visitors (approx.)Main Draw
Istanbul~20 millionCulture, history, city breaks
Antalya~16 millionAegean/Mediterranean beach resorts
Cappadocia~3.5 millionBalloon flights, volcanic landscape
Bodrum~2 millionAegean coast, sailing, nightlife

Cappadocia numbers have grown significantly since drone and balloon photography popularised the region on social media from around 2017. Average stay in Cappadocia is approximately 2.5 nights, short by destination standards but high-yield due to premium balloon-flight pricing (typically $150–$300 per person).

Seasonality

Türkiye has a pronounced summer peak, though Istanbul operates more evenly across the year than the coastal resorts.

Q1 (Jan–Mar)13%
Q2 (Apr–Jun)24%
Q3 (Jul–Sep)40%
Q4 (Oct–Dec)23%

July–August accounts for roughly 28% of annual arrivals alone, concentrated almost entirely on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. Istanbul runs at roughly 60–70% of peak occupancy even in January, supported by city-break travellers from the Gulf, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

Domestic Tourism

Domestic overnight travel is substantial and often overlooked in aggregate figures. TurkStat recorded approximately 80 million domestic overnight trips in 2023, with Turkish residents spending roughly 186 billion Turkish lira on domestic tourism (approximately $6 billion at 2023 exchange rates). The Black Sea coast (especially Trabzon and Artvin), Cappadocia, and Istanbul are the top domestic destinations.

Five-Year Outlook

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s 2023–2028 strategy targets 90 million annual arrivals and $100 billion in receipts by 2028 - goals that most analysts consider ambitious but not implausible given existing infrastructure and airlift capacity. Istanbul Airport (opened 2018) is designed for 200 million passengers annually at full build-out; current throughput is around 70 million, leaving substantial headroom for growth.
