Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) sits on Istanbul’s Asian side, approximately 45–55km from the European tourist districts of Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu. It is the city’s second airport - smaller than Istanbul Airport (IST), but handling significant traffic from Pegasus Airlines, Ryanair, easyJet, and SunExpress. Knowing which side of the Bosphorus your hotel is on before you arrive makes a significant difference to how you plan your transfer. This guide covers every option with approximate 2026 prices.
Airport Overview
SAW operates from a single terminal with domestic and international arrivals in the same building. The terminal is modern and manageable in scale.
On arrival you’ll find:
- Havaist bus stops (outside arrivals exit, ground level - SAW-3 to Taksim, SAW-4 to Kadıköy)
- Official taxi rank (immediately outside the terminal)
- Metro station access (SAW-M4 metro, follow signs from the arrivals hall)
- Car hire desks inside the terminal (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, local operators)
- ATMs near the arrivals exit - use bank-branded machines (İş Bankası, Garanti BBVA, Yapı Kredi) for the best rates
- SIM card kiosks (Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom) near the exit
- Currency exchange desk in arrivals (the ATM typically offers better rates)
Option 1: Havaist Airport Bus
Havaist (HAVAŞ) operates dedicated shuttle buses from SAW into the city. This is the most practical public transport option for most international arrivals.
Key routes:
- SAW-3 → Taksim Square (Beyoğlu, European side): approximately ₺130–160 per person as of 2026. Journey time 60–90 minutes in normal traffic; 90–150 minutes during morning rush (08:00–10:00) or evening rush (17:00–20:00) due to bridge congestion. Runs regularly throughout the day.
- SAW-4 → Kadıköy (Asian side ferry hub): approximately ₺80–110 per person as of 2026. Journey time 35–50 minutes, significantly quicker than crossing to the European side. From Kadıköy, ferries cross the Bosphorus to Eminönü (30 minutes, approximately ₺20) or Beşiktaş (25 minutes).
Best for: solo travellers and couples heading to Taksim, Beyoğlu, or Sultanahmet (via Taksim onward transport), and anyone staying on the Asian side near Kadıköy.
Practical note: Havaist bus frequencies vary by season and time of day. Check the Havaş app or the departure board outside the terminal for current times. Buses to Taksim do not run 24 hours - for late-night arrivals (after approximately 23:00), plan for a taxi or pre-booked transfer.
Option 2: Metro (M4 Line)
The M4 metro line has an extension that connects directly to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. This runs to Kadıköy and intermediate stations on the Asian side.
To Kadıköy:
- Cost: approximately ₺20–30 using the Istanbul Kart contactless card as of 2026
- Journey time: approximately 40–50 minutes to Kadıköy
- Frequency: every 5–10 minutes during peak hours
- From Kadıköy: board the Bosphorus ferry to Eminönü or Beşiktaş for the European side (approximately 20–30 minutes, approximately ₺20)
Via Marmaray to Sirkeci (Old City): From Pendik (reachable from the airport metro), board the Marmaray suburban rail. Sirkeci station is adjacent to the Topkapı Palace area. The full journey from the airport to Sirkeci takes approximately 75–100 minutes including connections.
Best for: travellers staying on the Asian side, or those willing to trade journey time for cost. The metro is significantly cheaper than any other option but requires navigating a connection.
Istanbul Kart: a rechargeable contactless card valid on metro, tram, bus, funicular, and ferry. Buy at machines in the arrivals hall. The card costs approximately ₺100–150 (refundable deposit) with credit loaded separately. Essential for staying on public transport throughout your visit.
Option 3: Official Taxi
Metered taxis queue at the dedicated rank outside the arrivals exit. All licensed Istanbul taxis are metered.

Practical Arrival Tips
Know which side your hotel is on. If your hotel is in Kadıköy, Üsküdar, or anywhere on the Asian side, SAW is actually convenient and transfers are quick and cheap. The long, expensive journeys only apply when crossing to the European side.
Night arrivals: the Havaist bus to Taksim typically stops around 23:00–24:00. For late arrivals, a taxi or pre-booked private transfer is the only practical option. Pre-booking removes the uncertainty of queuing at the taxi rank at 2am.
SIM card: buy at the kiosk in arrivals. Tourist SIM packages from Turkcell or Vodafone start at approximately ₺400 for 30 days with 20–30GB data as of 2026. A working SIM is useful at SAW where the navigation to bus stops and ferry connections requires maps.
Currency: use bank-branded ATMs at the terminal for fair rates.
Domestic connections at SAW: Pegasus operates domestic routes from SAW to Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Trabzon, Erzurum, and more. If you’re connecting onwards domestically, the transfer within the terminal is straightforward - follow “Domestic Departures” signage.

Returning to SAW
Allow sufficient buffer for the bridge crossing - 90 minutes from Taksim is the minimum in normal conditions; allow 2 hours during peak periods, plus standard check-in and security time (arrive 2 hours before departure for international, 1.5 hours for domestic). The Havaist bus returns from Taksim to SAW on the same route. A metered taxi from Taksim or Sultanahmet costs approximately the same as the inbound journey.
