The Istanbulkart is Istanbul’s universal transit smart card, accepted on all public transport in the city: metro, tram, metrobus, buses, ferries, funiculars, cable cars, and historic tram lines. A single tap-in covers the journey regardless of distance within the same network zone. For anyone spending more than one day in Istanbul, it is the most practical and cheapest way to get around.
This guide covers where to buy one, how to load credit, how to use it on every transport type, and the current fare structure.
What the Istanbulkart Covers
The Istanbulkart works across all IETT-operated and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality transport:
- Metro (M lines): All metro lines including M1 (airport line), M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, and M9
- Tram (T lines): T1 historic tram from Kabataş to Bağcılar, T3 Eminönü–Alibeyköy, T4 and T5 lines
- Metrobus: The dedicated bus rapid transit line running the European–Asian E5 highway (requires separate tap at each leg)
- IETT buses: All city buses across Istanbul’s European and Asian sides
- Ferries: IDO and Şehir Hatları ferries — Karaköy–Kadıköy, Eminönü–Üsküdar, Golden Horn line, Bosphorus services
- Marmaray: The rail tunnel under the Bosphorus connecting Halkalı to Gebze
- Funicular (F lines): Kabataş–Taksim and Karaköy–Beyoğlu funiculars
- Nostalgia tram: The historic tram on İstiklal Caddesi
- Teleferik: Cable car services to Belgrade Forest and the Bosphorus hills
Not covered: Private shuttle buses, Havaist airport buses (these accept card payment but not Istanbulkart specifically), licensed taxis, and Havalimani/Sabiha Gökçen bus services to the city centre from some operators.
Where to Buy an Istanbulkart
Metro Station Vending Machines
The most reliable source. All metro stations have vending machines with English, Turkish, Arabic, and Russian language options. The process:
- Select “New Istanbulkart”
- Pay the card fee (approximately ₺80 as of 2026 — this is a deposit, not credit)
- The machine issues the card; you can then immediately load credit at the same machine
The card fee/deposit is technically refundable if you return the card at specific IETT offices with ID documentation — in practice, most tourists do not bother with the refund process.
Istanbul Airport (IST)
Istanbulkart machines are in the Arrivals hall at Istanbul Airport, located near the entrance to the metro (M11 line) to the city. Buy one here immediately after clearing customs — you will need it for the metro ride to the city centre (Gayrettepe station, approximately 35 minutes, then transfer to M2).
Alternative at IST: The Havataş bus to Taksim accepts contactless payment (Visa/Mastercard) and does not require Istanbulkart. But for longer stays, Istanbulkart is more economical.
Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)
Istanbulkart machines at Sabiha Gökçen are near the arrivals exit, adjacent to the bus stops. The Marmaray bus to Ayrılık Çeşmesi station (where you connect to the M4 metro to the city) uses Istanbulkart.
Ferry Terminals and Bus Stops
Major ferry terminals (Eminönü, Karaköy, Kadıköy, Kabataş, Üsküdar) and large bus stops have Istanbulkart sales kiosks (blue IETT booths). These are staffed during daytime hours and can sell new cards and provide top-ups. Slightly less convenient than metro machines but widely distributed.
Newsstands and Shops (Bayii)
Some authorised newsagents near transport hubs sell Istanbulkart and offer top-up services. Look for the IETT logo. Less reliable outside tourist areas — not all shops near metro stations are authorised bayii.
How to Load (Top Up) Credit
At metro vending machines: The most convenient option. Select “Add Credit,” tap your card on the reader, select the amount (₺50, ₺100, ₺200, or custom amounts), and pay with cash or bank card. The credit is loaded instantly.
At IETT kiosks: Staff-operated kiosks at major transport hubs can add credit for cash. Some accept bank cards. Show the card, state the amount, pay, and they load it for you.
Online (Istanbulkart app): Download the Istanbulkart app (iOS/Android). You can register your card and add credit online via bank card — but the credit takes up to 30 minutes to synchronise to the card and requires tapping the card on a transport reader before it activates. Useful for managing a registered card; less so for a tourist who needs credit immediately.
How much to load: For typical tourist use (metro from airport, day of sightseeing, ferry crossings), ₺200 lasts 2–3 days of active use. A return Istanbulkart journey costs approximately ₺25–30 total. Load ₺200–300 initially.
Using the Card: Step by Step
Metro, tram, and bus: Tap the card on the yellow contactless reader at the turnstile as you enter. A green light and beep confirm the deduction. The turnstile opens. Do not tap again on exit.
Ferries: Tap the card on the reader at the terminal gate (before boarding). At some ferry terminals this is a card reader on a post; at others it is a turnstile. The deduction happens as you enter the boarding area.
Transfers: If you transfer between metro, tram, or bus within a specified transfer window (approximately 90 minutes), a discount applies on the subsequent journey (approximately 50% of standard fare). Transfers between the same network type (e.g., two buses) within the window count as a transfer. Transfers from Metrobus to metro or tram count as a standard new journey.
Multiple passengers: One card can be used for multiple people. Tap once per person — the reader deducts the fare once per tap. Hand the card back and tap again for the next person. There is no limit on the number of people using one card (though carrying multiple cards is common for groups).
Fares and Cost Savings
As of 2026:
| Journey type | Istanbulkart | Single token (jeton) |
|---|---|---|
| Metro (1 zone) | approx ₺13–16 | approx ₺25–30 |
| Tram T1 | approx ₺13 | approx ₺25 |
| IETT bus | approx ₺13 | cash only (higher) |
| Şehir Hatları ferry | approx ₺20–25 | approx ₺35–40 |
| Marmaray | approx ₺13–20 | approx ₺25 |
Prices are subject to periodic adjustment; check the IETT website for current fares.
The Istanbulkart discount versus single-use tokens is approximately 40–50%, which means the card pays for itself in deposit value after approximately 5–6 journeys compared to buying tokens.
The Istanbul Metro Network
Understanding the metro lines helps plan your routes:
M1 (red): Airport line — Istanbul Airport (IST) → Gayrettepe (M2 connection). Essential for airport arrivals.
M2 (green, north-south, European side): Yenikapı → Taksim → Levent → Hacıosman. Covers the main European-side tourist corridor: Taksim Square (exit for İstiklal Caddesi), Şişhane (for Galata Tower), Vezneciler (for Istanbul University and Grand Bazaar vicinity).
M4 (orange, Asian side): Kadıköy → Sabiha Gökçen Airport. The primary Asian-side metro line, also connecting to Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi for cross-Bosphorus travel.
Marmaray: Rail tunnel crossing — connects Halkalı on the European side to Gebze on the Asian side, stopping at Yenikapı, Sirkeci (European terminus of old Oriental Express), and Üsküdar. Crossing takes approximately 4 minutes under the Bosphorus.
T1 tram: Kabataş → Eminönü → Sultanahmet → Beyazıt → Bağcılar. The most useful tourist tram line — runs directly past the main historic sights (Sultanahmet stop for Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace entrance).
Key Routes for Visitors
Istanbul Airport → Taksim: M11 metro from IST to Gayrettepe (35 min), transfer to M2 Taksim (5 min). Total: approximately 45 minutes. Cost with Istanbulkart: approximately ₺30 (two journeys).
Taksim → Sultanahmet: M2 south to Yenikapı (15 min), transfer to T1 tram east to Sultanahmet (10 min). Total: approximately 30 minutes. Cost: approximately ₺25 (with transfer discount).
Sultanahmet → Kadıköy (Asian side) by ferry: Walk to Eminönü (10 min), ferry Eminönü → Kadıköy (25 min). One of the great urban transport experiences — the Bosphorus crossing with views of the old city and the Asian hills. Cost: approximately ₺20.
Taksim → Grand Bazaar: M2 south to Vezneciler or walk from Kapalıçarşı tram stop on T1. Approximately 20 minutes total.
Üsküdar → Kadıköy (Asian side): Ferry or M4 metro (2 stops). Ferry is more atmospheric; metro is faster.
Practical Tips
Check your balance before boarding: Balance displays on the card reader after each tap. If your balance drops below ₺15, the card may not allow transfer discounts — top up before the balance runs low.
Lost card: Unregistered cards cannot be refunded if lost. If you plan to stay for several weeks, registering the card via the Istanbulkart app protects the balance.
Card lifespan: Istanbulkart cards are durable and can be stored and reused on future visits to Istanbul — the credit does not expire.
Taxis vs transit: Istanbul taxis use meters and should be licensed (yellow cabs with taxi signs). Ride-hailing apps (BiTaksi, Uber) also operate. For short intra-neighbourhood trips, taxis can be faster than route planning; for longer cross-city journeys, metro and ferry are typically both cheaper and faster during rush hour (7–9am, 5–8pm).

Essential extras: An eSIM for Turkey from Airalo gives you mobile data from the moment you land — no airport SIM queue, no physical card. Travel insurance for Turkey should cover medical costs; Turkish private hospitals charge full rates for uninsured visitors.
