Marmaris and Rhodes sit just across the water from each other - the Greek island is approximately 22 kilometres from the Turkish coastline. The ferry crossing takes 50 minutes, and with daily sailings in season, Rhodes is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips available from any point on the Turkish coast. A UNESCO World Heritage medieval city, excellent beaches, and strong café and restaurant culture make the crossing well worth the ticket price.
The Route
Departure port: Marmaris harbour (the main marina and waterfront in central Marmaris) Arrival port: Rhodes Town harbour (Mandraki Harbour, central Rhodes) Crossing time: approximately 50 minutes Season: May to October; daily in peak summer Operators: Yeşil Marmaris, Dodekanisos Seaways
The departure point is the Marmaris marina waterfront - the same area as the restaurants and bars on the harbour promenade. Ticket offices are at the water’s edge. Mandraki Harbour on Rhodes deposits you directly in front of the medieval walls and the column-topped entrance piers.

Rhodes: What to Do
Rhodes Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site):
Rhodes Old Town is enclosed by massive 14th-century walls built by the Knights of St. John. It is one of the most complete surviving medieval fortified cities anywhere in the world. The main areas:
- Palace of the Grand Masters: The restored Crusader palace at the highest point of the old city. Entry approximately €8. The main hall contains a Roman mosaic floor transplanted from Kos.
- Street of the Knights (Ippoton): The perfectly preserved medieval street that leads down from the palace, flanked by the inns of each Crusader order. No entry fee - it is an open street.
- Archaeological Museum: Housed in the Knights’ hospital, one of the finest medieval buildings in the Aegean. Entry approximately €8. Contains classical sculpture and finds from across the Dodecanese.
- Suleymaniye Mosque: Built by Suleiman the Magnificent after the Ottoman conquest of 1522. The minarets are visible across the old city.
- The labyrinth: The back streets of the old town - away from the main tourist axis - have authentic neighbourhood restaurants and craft shops worth exploring.
Rhodes New Town and beaches (outside the walls):
- Mandraki Harbour: The medieval windmills and the column-top deer statues at the entrance are iconic.
- Monte Smith hill: Ancient acropolis with views and a small restored theatre. 15-minute walk from the old town.
- Beaches: Elli Beach is a 10-minute walk from Mandraki; Faliraki (14km south) has longer stretches.
For day-trippers arriving on the morning ferry, a focused walk through the old town - palace, Street of the Knights, Archaeological Museum, lunch - fills the day well. Plan to be back at the harbour 20 minutes before return departure.

Practical Tips
- Cobblestones: Rhodes Old Town’s streets are beautiful but hard-going in heels or flip-flops. Closed-toe shoes are better.
- Heat in July–August: The old town can be oppressively hot in the middle of the day. Start early, take a shaded lunch, and explore again in the late afternoon.
- Restaurants: Eating inside the walls is pricier and more tourist-oriented than the neighbourhood restaurants 500m further in. The alley restaurants off Sokrates Street are better value.
- Time zones: Greece and Turkey are both UTC+3 in summer, so there is no time zone adjustment to account for.
Combining with Other Routes
From Rhodes, inter-island ferries reach Kos, Symi, Patmos, and other Dodecanese islands. The Bodrum–Kos ferry is a natural companion if you are island-hopping: Marmaris to Rhodes, then ferry to Kos, then Kos back to Bodrum.
