Samos lies roughly 3 kilometres off the Turkish coastline near Kuşadası - the Mycale strait separating the two is one of the narrowest points in the Aegean. Despite this proximity, the crossing takes 90 minutes because the ferry follows the coast and navigates around the southern tip of the island before entering Samos Town harbour. Kuşadası is a busy resort and the gateway to Ephesus, making the Samos crossing popular with travellers already in the area for archaeological sightseeing.
The Route
Departure port: Kuşadası ferry terminal (main harbour, central Kuşadası) Arrival port: Samos Vathy (Vathy harbour, the island capital on the north coast) Crossing time: approximately 90 minutes Season: April to October Operators: Erturk Lines (primary operator)
The Kuşadası terminal is at the base of the marina, easily findable from the main waterfront. Erturk Lines has an office at the harbour. On arrival, Vathy is a working town (not purely a tourist resort), which gives it a more authentic character than some Dodecanese ports.
Schedules and Timetable
Peak summer (July–August): Daily departures from Kuşadası (typically morning, 08:00–09:30), daily returns from Samos in the afternoon. Shoulder season (April–June, September–October): Usually daily or near-daily in summer shoulder; reduces to a few times per week in April and October. Winter (November–March): No scheduled service.
The Kuşadası–Samos route has fewer operators than Bodrum–Kos or Marmaris–Rhodes, so Erturk Lines is essentially the only option. Check their website directly for current timetables.

Samos: What to Do
Samos Vathy (arrival port):
- Archaeological Museum of Samos: One of the best archaeological museums in Greece outside Athens. Contains the famous 5.5-metre kouros statue (archaic sculpture) and finds from the Heraion sanctuary. Entry approximately €6.
- Vathy town waterfront: A curved bay with a promenade lined with cafés and tavernas. The neoclassical building stock reflects Samos’s 19th-century prosperity from wine and tobacco.
- Ano Vathy (upper village): The older Ottoman-era part of town above the harbour, with wooden-balconied houses and a quieter character.
Outside Vathy (transport required):
- Pythagoreion (14km southwest): A UNESCO World Heritage ancient city and harbour, named after the mathematician Pythagoras who was born on Samos. Contains the Eupalinos aqueduct tunnel - a 6th-century BCE engineering feat. Entry approximately €4. The town also has a Byzantine castle and good waterfront restaurants.
- Heraion (21km southwest): The ruins of the enormous Temple of Hera - one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world in its original form, though only one column stands today. Entry approximately €6.
- Wines: Samos is known for its sweet Muscat wine. The Samos cooperative produces excellent examples - available in Vathy liquor shops and restaurants.
For a day trip without a car: Vathy Archaeological Museum + waterfront lunch is a satisfying half-day. A taxi to Pythagoreion and back (approximately €40–50 round trip) adds the main ancient site.

Kuşadası Connection: Ephesus
Kuşadası is the standard base for visiting Ephesus - one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world. Selçuk (the town closest to Ephesus) is 20km inland. Many travellers combine:
- Day 1: Ephesus and Selçuk
- Day 2: Ferry to Samos
The Çeşme–Chios ferry is approximately 1.5 hours north of Kuşadası via İzmir, giving a second Greek island option from the same base.
