Airplane over Turkey — flights to Turkey guide

Türkiye has an unusually large number of international airports, and Turkish Airlines operates one of the world’s most connected networks. This works in travellers’ favour — competition keeps fares reasonable, and you can often fly directly to your final destination rather than connecting through Istanbul.

Türkiye’s Major International Airports

Istanbul Airport (IST) replaced the old Atatürk Airport in 2019 and is now one of Europe’s busiest hubs. It sits about 35 km north of the city centre on the European side, connected by bus, metro (expected full completion by 2026), and taxi.

Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side of Istanbul, about 40 km from Sultanahmet. It handles a significant share of budget carrier traffic and is often cheaper to fly into. If your hotel is on the Asian side, Sabiha Gökçen may be more convenient.

Antalya (AYT) is the main gateway for the Turkish Riviera and one of Europe’s busiest airports in summer, handling enormous charter and scheduled traffic from the UK, Germany, Russia, and Scandinavia.

Bodrum Milas (BJV) serves the Aegean coast. Dalaman (DLM) covers Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, and Marmaris. Izmir Adnan Menderes (ADB) serves the northern Aegean and is the closest airport for Ephesus. Ankara Esenboğa (ESB) serves the capital. Trabzon (TZX) is the gateway to the Black Sea coast. Kayseri (ASR) and Nevşehir (NAV) both serve Cappadocia.

Airlines Serving Türkiye

Turkish Airlines (TK) is the dominant carrier, flying direct to Istanbul from over 300 destinations worldwide. From the UK, Turkish Airlines operates from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. From the US, direct flights run from New York (JFK), Washington Dulles (IAD), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), Houston (IAH), Miami (MIA), and several other cities.

From the UK, Pegasus Airlines (budget), easyJet, Jet2, TUI, and British Airways also serve Turkish airports. Ryanair flies to some Turkish destinations from European bases. Flight time from London to Istanbul is approximately 3.5-4 hours.

From the US, direct flight time from New York to Istanbul is approximately 10-11 hours. Delta and United also operate direct services alongside Turkish Airlines on key US routes.

From Europe, virtually every major carrier connects to Istanbul. Pegasus Airlines offers budget connections from many European cities to both Istanbul airports and regional Turkish destinations.

Pegasus Airlines deserves specific mention — it is Türkiye’s largest budget carrier, based at Sabiha Gökçen, and offers remarkably cheap fares on both domestic and international routes.

Best Time to Book for Deals

Türkiye’s peak season runs from mid-June through August, particularly for coastal destinations. Istanbul stays busy year-round but sees peaks in April-May and September-October when the weather is most pleasant.

The cheapest fares appear for November through February (excluding Christmas and New Year), when coastal resorts are largely shut and Istanbul is cool and rainy. March, April, and October offer a strong balance of lower fares and good weather.

We recommend booking 6 to 12 weeks ahead for European short-haul flights and 3 to 5 months ahead for US routes. Return flights from London to Istanbul start from approximately £80-120 with budget carriers in the off-season, rising to £200-350 in peak summer as of 2026. Returns from New York to Istanbul range from approximately $500-700 off-peak to $1,000+ in July and August as of 2026.

Fly into regional airports directly. A flight from London to Dalaman or Antalya is often cheaper than London to Istanbul, especially in summer when charter capacity increases.

Domestic Flights Within Türkiye

Türkiye’s domestic flight network is extensive and affordable. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus between them connect over 50 domestic airports. AnadoluJet (Turkish Airlines’ domestic brand) and SunExpress also operate domestic routes.

Key domestic routes and approximate flight times from Istanbul:

  • Istanbul to Antalya: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Istanbul to Cappadocia (Kayseri): 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Istanbul to Trabzon: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Istanbul to Izmir: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Istanbul to Ankara: 1 hour 10 minutes

Domestic one-way fares start from approximately 400-600 TRY (roughly $12-18) on Pegasus if booked early as of 2026. Turkish Airlines domestic fares are higher but include baggage and meals. Given the size of the country (Istanbul to Antalya is over 700 km by road), domestic flights save enormous amounts of time compared to buses.

Budget Tips

Choose Sabiha Gökçen over Istanbul Airport. Fares into SAW are often 20-30% cheaper, and Pegasus Airlines operates most of its flights from there. The trade-off is a longer transfer to the European side of Istanbul.

Book Pegasus early. Their lowest fares sell out fast, and prices rise steeply closer to departure. Pegasus also charges separately for checked luggage and seat selection — cabin-bag-only fares are the cheapest option.

Consider flying midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday departures are consistently cheaper on both domestic and international routes.

Use open-jaw routing. Fly into Istanbul and out of Antalya (or Bodrum, or Dalaman) to avoid backtracking. This works particularly well for itineraries covering both the city and the coast.

Watch for Turkish Airlines sales. TK runs periodic global fare sales (often in January, March, and September) that can cut long-haul fares by 30-40%.

Factor in the currency advantage. The Turkish lira has been weak against major currencies, making domestic flights and ground transport particularly good value for visitors paying in GBP, EUR, or USD.

Getting from the Airport to the City Centre

Istanbul Airport → Sultanahmet/Taksim: The Havaist bus service takes approximately 60-90 minutes depending on traffic and costs about 180 TRY as of 2026. The metro (M11 line) connects to the city network. Taxis cost approximately 500-700 TRY to Sultanahmet, with a fixed-price option available from the taxi desk.

Sabiha Gökçen → European Istanbul: The Havabus shuttle runs to Taksim in approximately 90 minutes for about 180 TRY as of 2026. Taxis to Sultanahmet cost approximately 600-800 TRY. The metro connection (M4 line) reaches Kadıköy, from where ferries cross to the European side.

Antalya → city centre/resorts: Buses run to the city centre (about 30 minutes) and to Kemer, Side, and Alanya. Many hotels arrange transfers. A taxi to central Antalya costs approximately 400-500 TRY as of 2026.

Cappadocia (Kayseri) → Göreme: Shuttle services meet most flights and run to Göreme and Ürgüp in approximately 60-75 minutes for around 250-350 TRY as of 2026. Most hotels can arrange a pickup.
