Embassies and Consulates in Türkiye: Contacts and Help

Visitors on the steps of Anitkabir in Ankara, the capital where most embassies are based

Most travellers never need their embassy. If you do, knowing where it sits and what it will actually do saves hours. Most embassies are in Ankara, with consulates in Istanbul and sometimes Izmir, Antalya or Adana. Walk-in access is limited, so book or phone first.

In an emergency

Call 112 for ambulance and emergency services, or 155 for police, before contacting anyone else. Once you are safe, call your embassy or consulate. Keep a photo of your passport and the embassy number saved offline. Our Türkiye safety guide covers common risks, and good travel insurance pays for medical care and evacuation, which embassies cannot.

What embassies can do

  • Issue emergency travel documents
  • Contact family or friends on your behalf
  • Provide lists of local lawyers and doctors
  • Visit you if you are arrested or hospitalised
  • Advise on crisis situations and evacuations

What they cannot do

They cannot pay your bills, get you out of jail, interfere in local court cases, or give legal advice.

If you lose your passport

  1. Report the loss or theft to the local police and get a written report (needed for insurance and replacement).
  2. Contact your embassy or consulate. Bring photos, any copy of your passport, and the police report.
  3. Apply for an emergency travel document, usually valid for a single journey home.
  4. Check your entry stamp or e-visa status. You may need to settle this before exiting, so see our Türkiye visa guide.

If you are in the capital while waiting on paperwork, a guided tour of Ankara fills the time well, with Anıtkabir the obvious first stop.
