Rize is the tea capital of Türkiye - a Black Sea coastal city surrounded by steep hillsides covered in dense tea gardens, with a dramatic mountain backdrop rising to the Kaçkar range. The city itself is a working port and administrative centre rather than a primary tourist destination, but the surrounding landscape is outstanding: the Ayder Highland (Ayder Yaylası), 60km inland, is one of the finest mountain plateau destinations in Türkiye, with thermal springs, waterfalls and wooden highland huts. Rize is also a convenient overnight point between Trabzon (75km west) and the Georgian border. Most visitors split their time between the coastal city and the highland villages.

Best Areas to Stay in Rize

Rize City Centre is the practical base for coastal visits - the harbour, tea gardens, Rize Castle, Ziraat Botanical Garden and the Tea Museum are all within a short walk or taxi ride. It’s also the transport hub for Highland excursions.

Ayder Plateau (Ayder Yaylası) is the most atmospheric base if your focus is the mountains. At 1,350m elevation, it’s cool even in summer, with natural thermal springs in the village and the Kaçkar peaks above. The drive from Rize takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Çamlıhemşin District (on the road to Ayder) has several traditional valley villages with small guesthouses suited to those wanting to explore the Hemşin cultural landscape en route to the highlands.

Getting Around Rize

Within the city, taxis and dolmuş services cover most needs; the city is hilly and not entirely walkable. Practical Booking Tips

The Ayder plateau festival season runs from June to September, with the Ayder Sema Festival attracting visitors to the highland in late July. Winter brings heavy snowfall to the highlands (Ayder can be inaccessible December–April); the city of Rize remains accessible year-round but the winter tourism infrastructure is limited. Rize Tea is Türkiye’s primary tea-growing region - visiting the hillside tea gardens (most are privately owned but accessed via footpaths near Çayeli) during the spring plucking season (April–June) is a memorable experience. The Rize Natural History Museum (entry approximately ₺60 as of 2026) has a good display on the region’s biodiversity.
