Patara is not a town but a site - an ancient Lycian city with extraordinary ruins including a Roman triumphal arch, a theatre and a bouleuterion (parliament building), stretching across the edge of Türkiye’s longest beach (18km of unbroken sand). The nearest village is Gelemiş, 1.5km from the ruins, where a cluster of small guesthouses and pensions provide the practical base for visiting. Access to Patara is heavily regulated in summer to protect the sea turtle nesting grounds - the beach is closed between sunset and sunrise from June to September. The combination of world-class ruins, a protected wilderness beach and Lycian Way walking trails makes Patara one of the most rewarding undiscovered bases on the entire Mediterranean coast.
