Konya is the spiritual heart of Sufi Islam in Türkiye - a city of more than two million people built around the shrine of Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī (Mevlana), the 13th-century poet and mystic whose followers are known as whirling dervishes. It’s a conservative, deeply religious city with excellent food, important Seljuk architecture and the most visited museum in Türkiye outside Istanbul. It’s also an easy overnight stop between Istanbul (or Ankara) and the south coast, with a growing reputation as a standalone cultural destination. Accommodation is concentrated near the Mevlana Museum and the central Alaaddin Hill area.

Practical Booking Tips

Konya is a conservative Muslim city - alcohol is sold in tourist hotels but the local restaurant culture is largely dry, and modest dress is expected near the mosques and the Mevlana complex. The Sema ceremony (whirling dervish ritual) is performed at the Mevlana Cultural Centre on Saturday evenings throughout the year; free tickets should be collected in the morning from the Mevlana Museum entrance for the evening performance. Admission to the Mevlana Museum itself is free as of 2026. The December International Mevlana Commemoration (Şeb-i Arûs), held around 17 December annually, draws large crowds from around the world - book accommodation months in advance for this period.
