Marmaris Gulet Cruises: Dalyan, Cleopatra Island & Hisarönü Gulf Routes

Marmaris offers something that Fethiye and Bodrum can’t quite match: a natural harbour large enough to shelter an entire fleet during a storm, combined with immediate access to two completely different types of sailing territory. Head west out of Marmaris Bay and you’re into the sheltered channels of Hisarönü Gulf within the hour. Head east and the Bozburun Peninsula unfolds - pine-covered headlands, remote villages, and anchorages with no road access. Add in the Dalyan river cruise to the north and the Greek island of Rhodes a short hop offshore, and Marmaris becomes one of the most versatile sailing bases on the Turkish coast.

Where Gulets Depart

Marmaris Marina (Netsel Marina): Turkey’s largest marina by berth count, capable of handling 750+ vessels. Located directly in the centre of town. Most day-trip gulets leave from the public jetty adjacent to the marina’s east gate at 09:30. Walk from the bazaar district takes under 10 minutes.

İçmeler Pier: 8 km west of Marmaris centre, in the quieter resort of İçmeler. Several day-trip operators base here to avoid Netsel’s congestion at peak season. Dolmuş minibus from Marmaris centre runs every 20 minutes and costs TRY 20–30 as of 2026.

Marmaris Town Quay: The old boat landing near Bar Street. Used primarily by smaller excursion boats and Dalyan transfer vessels.

Dalyan Day Trip by Boat

The Dalyan river excursion is the most distinctive day trip from Marmaris - different in character from the standard coastal gulet tour because it involves a shallow-draft river boat rather than a seagoing gulet.

The route travels 28 km north from Köyceğiz Lake mouth through the Dalyan river delta to Dalyan town, then south again to İztuzu beach. Highlights along the way:

• Lycian rock tombs at Dalyan: Carved directly into the cliff face above the river, 4th century BC. Viewable from the boat without landing.
• Sülüngür Lake: Freshwater marsh accessible by small wooden boat. Birdwatching and lotus flowers in season.
• İztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach): 4.5 km of sand, protected nesting habitat for loggerhead sea turtles. Beach section open to visitors 10:00–20:00 in nesting season (May–October); sections near nest sites are cordoned.
• Köyceğiz thermal mud baths: Optional stop on return leg. Sulphur-rich mud is applied, left to dry, then rinsed off in the lake.

Day-trip price from Marmaris as of 2026: EUR 80–95 per person, including minibus transfer to Köyceğiz or direct boat transfer from Marmaris, all river boat fees, and return. Entrance to İztuzu beach is free; mud bath is typically included in tour price.

Cleopatra Island (Sedir Island) Day Trip

Cleopatra Island (Sedir Adası) lies 45 km north of Marmaris by sea, inside the protected waters of Gökova Bay. According to local legend, the beach’s unusually fine-grained sand was imported from Egypt for Cleopatra - the sand is geologically distinct from the surrounding coastline, though the Cleopatra story is almost certainly embellished.

The island is a protected archaeological site (ancient city of Cedrae). Visitors can walk the ruins and swim on the famous beach. Day-trip gulets from Marmaris typically stop here combined with one or two other anchorages in Gökova Bay.

Typical Cleopatra Island day-trip circuit:

• Depart Marmaris marina 09:30
• Sail north into Gökova Bay (approximately 2.5 hours)
• Sedir Island / Cleopatra Beach - 2 hours ashore (entry fee approximately TRY 150–200 as of 2026)
• Lunch onboard at anchor in Gökova Bay
• Swim stop at secondary bay (varies by operator)
• Return Marmaris by 19:00

Day-trip price: EUR 90–120 per person including lunch and soft drinks. Private boat hire for the full day: EUR 550–750 for up to 10 guests.

Hisarönü Gulf Overnight Cruises (4–7 Nights)

The Hisarönü Gulf (Hisarönü Körfezi) stretches west of Marmaris toward the Bozburun Peninsula - a sheltered waterway with arguably the most diverse anchorages in Turkish coastal sailing. Deep green hills, Byzantine ruins, Ottoman-era red-pine forests, and barely-accessible villages reachable only by sea.

Typical 4-night Hisarönü circuit:

7-night Hisarönü–Datça–Rhodes circuit: Some operators offer an extended loop that crosses to Rhodes (Greece) for a night before returning via the Bozburun Peninsula. Requires valid travel documents for EU entry. Price: EUR 580–780 per person, EUR 5,200–7,000 for full charter.

• Bozburun Sailing - specialises in the southern Bozburun area with smaller boats (max 8 guests)
• Sea Star Cruises Marmaris - offers gulet + walking combinations with stops at Datça peninsula villages

Marmaris to Rhodes Day Trip

Rhodes is 50 km from Marmaris - the closest Turkish town to a major Greek island of this size. A high-speed catamaran (not a gulet) covers the distance in 50–60 minutes; day-trip ferry services run daily from April to October, with reduced frequency November–March.

Fare as of 2026: approximately EUR 45–60 return. Passport required (full passport for most nationalities; ID card for EU citizens). Excursion boats also offer day trips to Rhodes combining the ferry crossing with a local walking tour of Rhodes Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Note: most gulets aren’t used for the Rhodes crossing due to speed - the ferry or hydrofoil is the practical option for a day trip. Ask your gulet operator if a night stop on Rhodes can be incorporated into a longer charter.

Best Season

• May–June: Gulf is calm, temperatures comfortable (air 22–28°C), sea 20–23°C. Less humidity than July–August. Good for birdwatching at Dalyan.
• July–August: Peak season. Book shared cabins 2–3 months ahead. The Hisarönü Gulf is more sheltered from Meltemi winds than the open Aegean, making Marmaris a better choice than Bodrum for sailing in July. Dalyan turtle beach: only uncordoned sections accessible after 20:00 (check current regulations).
• September–October: Best overall month. Water 25–27°C in September, prices dropping 10–20% mid-September. İztuzu beach nesting season wraps up by end of October - turtle nest protection relaxed.
• November–April: Day trips suspended. A few private charter operators remain active for custom bookings with advance notice.

What Is Included

Standard inclusions on shared-cabin Marmaris gulets:

• Breakfast, lunch (usually cold meze spread), dinner (hot meal, typically grilled fish or chicken)
• Water, tea, coffee
• Snorkelling masks and fins
• Crew: captain + deckhand + cook (3-person crew on most 8-passenger boats)
• Harbour fees and fuel

Not included: alcohol (sold onboard), soft drinks, tipping crew (EUR 8–15 per person per day is customary), transfers from Marmaris hotels to marina, travel insurance, Greek port taxes if crossing to Rhodes.

Cabin Types

Marmaris has a broad mix of gulet ages and sizes. Older traditional gulets (1980s–1990s construction) are cheaper and have character but may lack modern air conditioning. Newer builds (2010s onward) have climate-controlled cabins, USB ports, and contemporary bathrooms.

Standard cabin: Double or twin beds, en-suite shower room, porthole. Approximately 5–7 sqm.

Forward master cabin: Slightly larger, sometimes with larger window. 15–25% price premium.

Private charter: Whole-boat hire, 2–3 crew included. Ranges from a 4-cabin gulet at EUR 2,800/week to a 7-cabin luxury schooner at EUR 9,000+/week depending on vessel age and specification.

Request the boat’s technical card (age, engine type, cabin dimensions, AC status) before confirming any booking. This is standard practice and any reputable operator will provide it.
