As the gateway city for Kayseri Airport, it sees significant transit traffic from Cappadocia-bound travellers who often don’t stop. The historic core around Kayseri Castle (Kayseri Kalesi) and the Kapalı Çarşı is where most visitors stay — walkable to the castle, bazaar, pastırma shops, and tram connections.
Why stay here: Central access to all the main city sights; tram connections to the otogar and onward transport; the best concentration of restaurants and the traditional market. The city centre is compact — most sights are within 15 minutes on foot.

Erciyes ski resort
Mount Erciyes has dedicated ski resort accommodation at the mountain base — ideal for skiers who want ski-in/ski-out access. The resort is 35km from the city centre.

City centre — what to know before booking
Kayseri city centre is walkable from most hotels to the castle (Kayseri Kalesi) — approximately 10–15 minutes on foot from the main commercial streets. The castle walls are floodlit at night and visible from much of the centre, which makes orientation easy on arrival.
Tram: Kayseri has a tram (Kayseray) connecting the otogar, city centre, and university — ₺10 per journey. Hotels within 5 minutes of the tram are the most practical for visitors without cars.
Bazaar area: The Kapalı Çarşı (covered bazaar) is the commercial and food heart of the city — pastırma producers, mantı restaurants, and the spice market are all within a 5-minute walk of the castle. Staying near this area gives the best walkability to food and shopping.
Erciyes — practical notes for skiers
The ski resort at Mount Erciyes (35km from city centre) is accessible by taxi (approximately ₺200–350 one way) or the Erciyes shuttle service during ski season. Kayseri as a Cappadocia base: honest assessment
For most visitors, staying in Cappadocia (Göreme, Ürgüp, Uçhisar) is preferable to Kayseri as a base — the cave hotels and balloon views are specific to the valley towns. Kayseri makes sense as a one-night stop on the way to or from Cappadocia, or for ski season visits, or as a genuine interest in the city itself (castle, bazaar, pastırma). The 90-minute bus connection means it is workable as a day-trip staging point, but not worth the trade-off for most travellers.
