Göcek sits at the northern end of the Gulf of Fethiye - a small, deliberately low-key town of roughly 3,500 permanent residents that happens to have six marinas and access to 12 uninhabited islands. It’s one of the few places on the Turkish coast where the dominant sound is wind in pine trees rather than nightclub music. Package tourism largely bypassed it, and the local authority has made a point of keeping it that way.

The town functions primarily as a sailing base. In summer the waters offshore fill with charter yachts doing the Blue Voyage route between Göcek and Marmaris or Bodrum. But you don’t need a yacht to get out to the islands - shared gulet day trips depart every morning from the main marina.

The marinas

Six marinas in a town of 3,500 people tells you something about the place’s priorities. The main ones worth knowing:

Marinturk Village Port - the largest and most central, with 450 berths. The boardwalk here has the best concentration of restaurants. Long-term liveaboards moor here in winter.

D-Marin Göcek - premium facilities, full fuel dock, haul-out yard. The preferred choice for larger charter vessels. Restaurant and pool available to marina guests.

Skopea Marina - quieter, slightly south of the main cluster. Popular with long-voyage sailors heading east toward Antalya or west toward the Aegean.

The marinas are pleasant to walk through even if you’re not sailing - there’s genuine nautical atmosphere (masts, ropes, the smell of diesel and sunscreen) and the waterfront restaurants facing the masts are some of the better dining in town.

The 12 islands

The cluster of islands in the Gulf of Fethiye - colloquially called the “12 islands” though the actual count varies depending on how you define an island - are the primary reason to come here. All are uninhabited (no hotels, no permanent facilities), all have clear water for swimming, and several have ancient ruins or Byzantine churches half-consumed by vegetation.

The standard day trip departs around 10:00 from the main marina, visits 4–6 bays and islands (swimming stops at each), serves lunch on board, and returns by 17:00–18:00. Cost: approximately ₺600–800 per person on a shared gulet. Private charter considerably more.

Key stops typically included:

Göcek Island (Büyük Ada): The largest, with a shingle beach, ruins of a monastery, and excellent snorkelling off the eastern point.
Tersane Island: An abandoned Byzantine dockyard - the stone arches are still standing, overgrown with maquis. Anchor in the bay and swim to the ruins.
Cleopatra’s Bay (Hamam Koyu): A thermal spring meets the sea here - the water is noticeably warmer than the open bay. Named for the legend that Cleopatra bathed here; probably apocryphal but the name stuck.
Kızılada (Red Island): Named for its distinctive ochre rock face. Good snorkelling at the base of the cliffs.

Getting around

Göcek town centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. The marinas are all within easy walking distance of the main street. For day trips by land - to Dalyan (65km), Ölüdeniz (60km), or Fethiye (35km) - you’ll need a dolmuş or hire a car. Compare rental rates at GetRentacar across local and international suppliers.

Where to eat

The town has a concentrated strip of restaurants along the marina boardwalk and the main pedestrian street (Cumhuriyet Caddesi). Quality is generally good - this is a wealthy sailing crowd, not a package-holiday crowd, so restaurants compete on food rather than happy-hour promotions.

Göcek Restaurant (marina boardwalk) - the most reliably good fish restaurant in town. Mains ₺180–350. Whole bream, sea bass, and red mullet grilled or baked in salt crust. Booking advised July–August.

Can Restaurant - slightly back from the marina, lower prices (mains ₺120–220), popular with boat crews and locals. Good meze spread and reliable grilled meat as well as fish.

Lokanta Göcek - Turkish home-cooking lunch spot: rotating daily dishes (dolma, slow-cooked lamb, lentil soup) at around ₺80–120 per person. Closes by 16:00 and is closed on Sunday.

İskele Café - the best breakfast in town. Göcek serves a proper Turkish breakfast spread: olives, white cheese, eggs, tomato, cucumber, honey, clotted cream (₺80–100 per person). Opens 07:30.

Where to stay

Göcek is small enough that accommodation is limited - this is a feature rather than a bug. You won’t find a 500-room all-inclusive here.

Sultan Motel - the longest-established family-run guesthouse, 500m from the marina. Clean, simple rooms with good air conditioning. From approximately ₺1,200/night double in shoulder season; ₺2,000–2,800 in July–August peak. Breakfast included.

Göcek Lykia Resort & Spa - the largest full-service hotel, 1.5km from town with its own small jetty. Pool, spa, tennis court. From approximately ₺3,500–6,000/night in peak season. Good option for families who want facilities without a marina berth.

Villa Göcek - boutique property with 14 rooms, rooftop pool overlooking the bay, and a good terrace restaurant. More design-conscious than the larger hotels. From approximately ₺2,500–4,500/night.

Liveaboard option: Several berth-and-cabin packages are available through the marina operators - essentially renting a moored yacht cabin. Marinturk Village Port is the main provider; rates vary considerably by vessel.

Practical tips

Yacht charter: Göcek is Turkey’s most popular charter base. A bareboat charter (you sail it yourself) starts from approximately €800–1,500/week for a 38-footer in shoulder season; crewed charters from €2,000–5,000/week depending on vessel. Book through established charter companies (Sunsail, The Moorings, or local operators D-Marin Charters) rather than harbour touts.

Fuel warning: Diesel at the marina fuel docks costs approximately 20–30% more than at a petrol station. For car hire, fill up in Fethiye or Dalaman.

Swimming: The town beach (a narrow strip near the marina) is adequate but not the reason to come here. The island day trips provide far better swimming. For a beach by land, Inlice Beach (5km east) is accessible by taxi.

Internet: Most marina restaurants and the main cafés have reliable Wi-Fi. The marinas themselves sell day/week data packages for liveaboards and longer-stay visitors.
