Skiing Erciyes, Kayseri: Lift Passes, Runs & Resort Guide

Erciyes is Turkey’s most modern ski resort and arguably the most rewarding for those who want to combine skiing with broader Central Anatolia travel. The ski area sits on the flanks of Mount Erciyes (3,917m), a dormant stratovolcano 25km south of Kayseri, and was transformed between 2012 and 2016 with a near-complete rebuild of its lift infrastructure. The result is a resort with genuinely contemporary facilities - a modern gondola, fixed-grip chairlifts, and wide-cut pistes - at a price point significantly below anything comparable in the Alps.

The added bonus: Kayseri airport is the main international gateway to Cappadocia, making Erciyes a logical ski extension for anyone already planning a Cappadocia trip in winter.

The Mountain: Runs and Difficulty

The ski area runs between approximately 2,100m and 3,400m, with 12 lifts including the main Kayak Gondol (a high-speed detachable gondola installed in 2014) and several fixed-grip chairlifts. Total marked piste length is approximately 40km:

• Beginner (green/blue): 25% - the lower mountain around the gondola base has gentle terrain well-suited to first-timers and improving beginners. The ski school meets here.
• Intermediate (red): 50% - the majority of the mountain. Wide, long red runs fan out from the gondola mid-station across open volcanic terrain. The runs are generally wider than Turkish ski resorts’ historical average - the renovation opened up several previously forested corridors.
• Advanced/Expert (black + off-piste): 25% - steeper lines off the upper flanks, including the Süphan and Hasan runs. The summit area above 3,000m offers ungroomed terrain for experienced off-piste skiers on appropriate equipment.

The volcanic landscape gives Erciyes a distinctive character - open bowls rather than narrow tree-lined chutes, with panoramic views across the Anatolian plateau on clear days.

The primary operator is Erciyes Kayak Merkezi (Erciyes Ski Center), managed by Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality. Ski Season Dates

Erciyes’ season runs from late November through late April in most years. The volcanic topography and altitude above 3,000m give it the longest reliable season of any major Turkish resort. January and February bring the best powder conditions; March offers good coverage with longer days and warmer apres-ski weather. April can still have excellent skiing above 2,800m.

Equipment Rental

Rental facilities are concentrated at the gondola base and at the main resort hotels:

Hotels on and Near the Mountain

Erciyes has a growing collection of hotels at the mountain base, all within 5–10 minutes’ walk of the gondola:

• Grand Eras Otel: The flagship on-mountain hotel, opened after the resort renovation. Modern rooms, indoor pool, spa, and a restaurant with mountain views. From approximately TRY 6,000–10,000 per night as of 2026.
• Erciyes Mountain Lodge: A mid-range option with comfortable rooms and a ski-in/ski-out-adjacent location. From approximately TRY 3,500–5,500 per night as of 2026.

Staying in Kayseri city (25km, 30-minute drive) offers a much wider range of accommodation options and lower prices. Kayseri has a compact and interesting old city centre with the Hunat Hatun complex and the İç Kale (inner castle), both worth seeing on an off-mountain day. Hotels in Kayseri centre start from approximately TRY 1,200–2,500 per night for decent mid-range options as of 2026.

Après-Ski and Restaurants

• Erciyes Restaurant (Grand Eras): The main on-mountain dining venue. Turkish mains - tavuk şiş, kuzu kebabı, sebzeli güveç (vegetable casserole) - alongside a bar serving beer and raki. Mains approximately TRY 250–500 as of 2026.
• Gondol Kafe: The mid-mountain café at the gondola’s upper station. Hot drinks, soup, and sandwiches with views over the Anatolian plain. Good for a mid-ski lunch break.
• Kayak Evi Restoran: A lively après-ski spot at the mountain base, with Turkish folk music some evenings and a full menu of grilled meats. Popular with weekend groups from Kayseri.

For dinner off-mountain, Kayseri has an excellent food scene. The city is known for its pastırma (cured beef) and sucuk (spiced sausage). Try Iskender Usta for grilled meats, or Develi Kayseri for traditional Anatolian dishes.

Non-Ski Activities

• Snowshoeing: Guided snowshoe tours operate from the resort base, taking routes through the volcanic landscape above the tree line. Tours from approximately TRY 800–1,200 per person including guide as of 2026, book at the resort information desk.
• Summit photography: The gondola reaches to approximately 3,000m, giving stunning views of the summit crater and the Anatolian plateau below. Non-skiers frequently ride up for the views.
• Cappadocia day trip: Göreme and the fairy chimneys are 75km away - a genuine hour-drive day trip that works perfectly if you’re skiing for most of a week.
• Kayseri city sightseeing: The Hunat Hatun Külliyesi (13th-century mosque-medrese complex), Kayseri Castle, and the covered bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı) are all within Kayseri’s walkable centre.
• Hamam: Several traditional Turkish baths in Kayseri city - try Kurşunlu Hamamı (a 16th-century Ottoman bathhouse) for a proper soak after a hard ski day.

Getting There

By air: Kayseri Erkilet Airport has daily domestic flights from Istanbul (approximately 1.5 hours) and connections from several European cities on charter and low-cost routes. From the airport, taxis to Erciyes ski resort cost approximately TRY 400–600 (25km, 30 minutes) as of 2026. Taxis to Kayseri city centre cost approximately TRY 150–250.

Resort shuttle: Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality operates a daily shuttle service from Kayseri otogar (bus station) and certain city centre points to the Erciyes ski area. Schedules vary by season - check current timetables at the resort website or Kayseri metro information points.

By car: Kayseri to Erciyes is a well-maintained 25km road. Winter tyres are advisable on the upper mountain road. Parking at the resort is free.
