Ölüdeniz, a small beach settlement on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast 15km from Fethiye, is consistently ranked among the world’s top paragliding destinations. The reason is straightforward: Babadağ mountain rises to 1,969m directly behind the beach, the Blue Lagoon below is one of the Mediterranean’s most photographed seascapes, and the combination of reliable summer thermals, warm temperatures, and a wide, flat beach landing zone makes the logistics of tandem flights exceptionally smooth.
On any given summer afternoon, 20–30 paragliders can be seen in the air simultaneously above Ölüdeniz - a spectacle from the beach that gives some indication of how well-established this scene is.
The Babadağ Mountain Launch Points
Operators use two primary launch points on Babadağ:
Lower launch (~1,700m): The standard departure point for most tandem packages. Reached by a 45-minute jeep ride from Ölüdeniz on a narrow mountain road with sweeping views as you ascend. The launch site has a broad open slope facing south toward the coast. At this altitude, on a typical summer afternoon, the flight from launch to landing at Belcekız Beach takes 25–40 minutes.
Upper launch (1,969m summit): Some operators offer access to the true summit launch point, which sits in open terrain with 360-degree views over the mountains and the Aegean. The altitude gives pilots more vertical distance to work with and allows for longer soaring. Flights from the summit typically last 40–65 minutes. This option is usually offered as a premium package and costs approximately €15–25 more than the standard flight.
What Happens on a Tandem Flight
Pickup and transfer: Operators collect passengers from Ölüdeniz beach or nearby accommodation. The jeep transfer to the launch site takes approximately 40–50 minutes on unpaved mountain roads - the road itself is an experience, with steep drops on one side and progressively expanding coastal views. Some passengers with motion sickness find this section challenging; take any medication before the drive, not after.
At the launch site: Your pilot fits you with a harness and helmet, explains the launch procedure, and checks all equipment. The launch itself is the moment many first-timers are nervous about: you stand side by side with the pilot, the wing inflates overhead and tugs upward, and you run forward together for 8–10 steps until you’re airborne. Most describe the transition from running to flying as surprisingly smooth - there is no dropping sensation.
In the air: Immediately after launch, the views open to include the Blue Lagoon’s distinctive turquoise triangle, the white sand of Belcekız Beach, and the Aegean stretching south to the Greek island of Rhodes on clear days. The pilot will point out landmarks and, if you’ve requested aerobatic options, may perform gentle spirals or wingovers (ask about this when booking - not all passengers want it, and it should be your choice). Conversation with your pilot is normal and encouraged.
Landing at Belcekız Beach: The standard landing zone is the wide beach area just north of the Blue Lagoon park entrance. Landing is a gentle running stop - pilots bring you in with feet first and running for the last few steps. Landings in moderate winds are typically very smooth; in gusty conditions, pilots time their final approach carefully. Bystanders on the beach often gather to watch, particularly when multiple pilots are landing simultaneously.
Photography Tips
The aerial views over Ölüdeniz are among the most photographic moments in Turkish travel. Options for capturing them:
GoPro or action camera: Most operators have GoPro mounts on helmets (yours or the pilot’s). Bring your own GoPro if you have one; mount rentals are available for approximately ₺150–250. Ensure a charged battery and empty card - flights fill storage faster than expected at 4K.
Pilot-operated video: Many operators offer a standard video package where the pilot holds a selfie-stick-style rig for part of the flight. Results vary by pilot - if this matters to you, ask to see sample footage from previous flights before purchasing.
Your own phone or mirrorless camera: Possible, but a wrist strap is non-negotiable. Dropping a phone at altitude over the sea would not be recoverable. Keep the camera on your wrist at all times. Camera bags and backpacks cannot be worn during flight.
Best light for photography: For the Blue Lagoon’s signature turquoise colour, fly in the morning when the sun is low and the water has maximum colour saturation. Afternoon flights have stronger thermals (longer flights) but the lagoon reads more blue-green in overhead light rather than the striking turquoise of morning.
Best Season to Fly
May–October: The core flying season. Summer thermals are reliable by late morning, and southerly and westerly sea breezes create the soaring conditions that allow extended flights. July and August are the peak months for visitor numbers - expect more people at the launch site and a busier landing beach.
Spring (April–May): Excellent flying with lower crowds. Some days have higher wind speeds than summer, which can ground flights temporarily, but the spring wildflowers on the mountain slopes and fewer tourists on the beach make this a rewarding time.
October: Late season but still excellent flying as temperatures moderate. The light in October has a particular quality at golden hour that makes aerial photography outstanding.
November–April: Operators scale back significantly. Some continue flying in winter when conditions allow, but it’s not a reliable period for planning a flight around.
Booking and Practical Logistics
Book your flight at least 24 hours in advance during July and August - popular morning slots fill quickly. Most operators allow same-day booking outside peak season. Confirm the meeting point (most operators meet at the beach rather than an office) and what time to arrive for your transfer.
Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes suitable for running a few steps. Dress in layers - temperatures at Babadağ’s summit are significantly cooler than the beach, typically 8–12°C lower. A light jacket is worth carrying up.
If your flight is cancelled due to wind or weather, reputable operators will offer a reschedule or full refund. Ask about the cancellation policy before paying.
Watching from the Beach
If you’d prefer to watch rather than fly, or want to see the spectacle before deciding, Belcekız Beach is the landing zone for all flights. Arriving between 2–5pm in summer gives the best concentration of simultaneous landings and launches. The sight of 20–30 coloured wings in the air above the Blue Lagoon, with the mountains behind, is worth the visit regardless.
