Guides for Oludeniz

Ölüdeniz sits on the southwest coast of Turkey, 15km south of Fethiye, at the point where a sheltered lagoon of impossibly still turquoise water is separated from the open sea by a narrow sand spit. The name means “Dead Sea” — not from any biblical reference but from the lagoon’s characteristic stillness even when the Aegean beyond it is rough. From the ridge of Babadağ Mountain (1,960m) directly above, it is one of the most recognisable aerial views in the Mediterranean: the dark blue of the open sea, the turquoise arc of the lagoon, the white strip of sand, paragliders circling like coloured kites.

Ölüdeniz is a small resort village — a strip of hotels, restaurants and paragliding operators along the road that terminates at the beach car park. It is not a destination for urban exploration. It exists for the Blue Lagoon, the tandem paragliding, and access to the beginning of the Lycian Way. For anything beyond that, Fethiye provides the support structure.

The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon (Ölüdeniz Tabiat Parkı) is a protected natural park. Entry costs approximately ₺200–250 per person as of 2026. The lagoon beach itself is a sand and pebble spit — you enter the shallow, warm lagoon water from the far end and wade into progressively deeper water as you move toward the channel connecting it to the sea.

The water temperature runs from around 18°C in early May to 27–28°C in August. The lagoon bottom is sandy and flat for the first 50–100 metres; deeper sections around the channel have slightly stronger current. Swimming outside the main lagoon area and into the open sea section is not advised without awareness of boat traffic — the bay is popular with gulets and speedboats.

Sunbeds and umbrellas rent for approximately ₺100–200 for two. Bringing your own towel and umbrella is permitted. There is a café and small restaurant inside the park. The park gates open at 8am and close at sunset.

Belcekız Beach — the long main beach immediately to the north of the lagoon park — is free to access and runs for about 1km. It tends to be more crowded than the lagoon but is also more lively, with beach bars and water sports operators. The north end of Belcekız is where most paragliders land.

Paragliding from Babadağ

Babadağ Mountain at 1,960m is one of the highest commercial paragliding launch sites in the world, and Ölüdeniz is among Europe’s most popular paragliding destinations. The thermal conditions — sea breeze meeting mountain updraft — allow for extended flights that can last 25–45 minutes on a good day.

How it works: Operators pick you up from the beach or your hotel, drive you to the launch area at approximately 1,900m (about 45 minutes), and you fly tandem with a qualified pilot. Landings are on Belcekız Beach. The entire experience from hotel pick-up to landing takes around 2.5–3 hours.

Cost: Approximately ₺3,000–4,000 per person for a standard flight (as of 2026). Packages with longer flight duration, GoPro footage or photos cost more. Several operators offer “extended” flights of 40–45 minutes for an additional premium.

Operators: Major operators include Sky Sports Turkey, Heli Air, SkyMax and Babadağ Paragliding. All should hold a current TÜRKPA (Turkish Paragliding Association) certificate — ask to see it before booking. Avoid booking with individuals who approach on the beach and cannot produce operator credentials.

Best conditions: Thermal flights are best in the morning (launches typically begin around 9–10am) and again in late afternoon. Midday can have strong thermals that produce a rougher flight experience. Most operators don’t fly in winds above a certain threshold — if conditions are not suitable, a reputable operator will reschedule.

Fitness requirements: No flying experience is required for a tandem flight. Most operators have a weight limit of around 100–110kg. People with recent back, neck or heart conditions should consult the operator before booking.

The Lycian Way — Western Trailhead

Ölüdeniz sits at the western end of the Lycian Way, the 540km coastal trekking route that runs east to Antalya. The trailhead begins in the hills above the village. Even if you’re not attempting a long-distance section, the first 4–6km from Ölüdeniz toward the Blue Cave and the clifftop viewpoints above the lagoon give outstanding views and take around 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace. Wear proper footwear — the path involves rocky, uneven terrain from the very start.

See our full Lycian Way trekking guide for day-by-day logistics on the full route.

Butterfly Valley (Kelebekler Vadisi)

Butterfly Valley is a steep-sided canyon 10km southwest of Ölüdeniz, accessible only by boat (no road access). The valley is named for the tiger moth populations that breed here in summer. A small eco-camp operates on the valley floor (camping approximately ₺200–300/night, basic bungalows from ₺600–800). Boats run from Ölüdeniz harbour daily in summer, round-trip approximately ₺150–200. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

Getting to Ölüdeniz from Fethiye

Dolmuş (shared minibus): The most common local option. Dolmuşes run between Fethiye town centre and Ölüdeniz approximately every 20–30 minutes in summer, every 45–60 minutes in shoulder season. The journey takes 25–35 minutes depending on traffic, and costs approximately ₺20–30 one way as of 2026. Departures from Fethiye are from the otogar and from the main street near Tansas supermarket.

Taxi: A private taxi from Fethiye centre to Ölüdeniz costs approximately ₺200–280 one way.

Car: The drive from Fethiye takes 20–25 minutes on the D400 south, then a turning toward the coast at Ovacık. Parking at the Ölüdeniz beach car park costs approximately ₺50–100/day in summer — arrive before 9am in July and August to secure a space.

Where to Stay

In Ölüdeniz: Budget and mid-range accommodation clusters along the main road between the Ovacık junction and the beach. Meri Hotel is a long-established option with pool, doubles from approximately ₺1,800–2,500/night. Hillside Beach Club — the most upmarket resort directly on the beach — has rooms from approximately ₺5,000–8,000/night including half-board.

In Fethiye (15km): Staying in Fethiye and day-tripping to Ölüdeniz is a practical alternative. Mid-range options in Fethiye’s old town or near the seafront run from approximately ₺1,200–2,500/night and provide access to restaurants, the bazaar and ferry connections to Göcek and the Twelve Islands boat trips.

In Ovacık (3km from beach): A quieter village between Fethiye and Ölüdeniz with a range of self-catering apartments and smaller hotels. Good value; a short dolmuş ride from the beach.

Food and Drink

The Ölüdeniz restaurant strip is tourist-oriented — expect menus in four languages, familiar Turkish dishes (köfte, pide, kebab), and sunset cocktails. For better value and quality, Fethiye’s Paspatur covered bazaar has a dense concentration of meyhane (Turkish tavern) restaurants. For seafood, the waterfront fish restaurants at Fethiye harbour are the regional benchmark.

In Ölüdeniz itself, Buzz Beach Bar and Restaurant near the north end of Belcekız is a reliable choice for post-paragliding meals — mains ₺150–300.

Practical Notes

  • The lagoon and beach get very busy in July and August — arrive before 9am.
  • Sunscreen is essential; the combination of beach reflection and altitude means burning happens faster than expected.
  • The sea at Ölüdeniz is free of jellyfish problems for most of the season, though isolated appearances occur — ask locally.
  • Boat trips from Ölüdeniz harbour cover Butterfly Valley, St Nicholas Island and the 12 Islands circuit — book directly at the harbour rather than through hotel front desks to get better prices.
