Cappadocia has no public transport network of any use for tourists within the valleys. The region’s extraordinary landscape — carved volcanic tufa, fairy chimney clusters scattered across a plateau roughly 60 km wide — is not designed to be crossed by bus. What it does have is a well-developed tourism transport infrastructure: shared shuttles, ATV hire, horse riding operators, and private driver services that together give visitors significant flexibility once they understand the options.
Getting to Cappadocia
From Kayseri Airport (ASR)
Kayseri Erkilet Airport is the main gateway to Cappadocia — 75 km from Göreme, about 1 hour by road. Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines and SunExpress operate direct flights from Istanbul (45–55 minutes), and there are connections from Ankara, Izmir, and several European cities in season.
From the airport, options are:
Shared shuttle: The standard option. Most Göreme accommodation can arrange a shuttle pickup (₺200–350/person as of 2026). Several shuttle companies — including Göreme Seyahat and various Cappadocia transfer services — operate fixed-departure shuttles that meet incoming flights and run to Göreme, Ürgüp and Avanos. Book in advance; the service is well-organised but fills up.
Private transfer: A private vehicle for 1–4 people from Kayseri Airport to Göreme costs approximately ₺700–1,200 as of 2026. Worth it for late-night arrivals or if you have heavy luggage and don’t want to wait for a shared shuttle to fill.
Taxi: The airport taxi rank has metered taxis. The fare to Göreme runs approximately ₺700–1,000 as of 2026, depending on negotiation and whether the meter is used. Always confirm before getting in.
Havas Airport Bus: Havas runs a bus from the airport to Kayseri city centre (approximately ₺60–100 as of 2026), from where you can pick up a bus toward Nevşehir and then a dolmuş to Göreme — but this multi-leg route takes 2.5–3 hours and is not practical with luggage.
From Nevşehir Airport (NAV)
Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is 40 km from Göreme (40 minutes by road) and serves fewer airlines and routes than Kayseri. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus operate seasonal routes from Istanbul. If your flight goes into Nevşehir, it’s closer to Göreme.
The Havas bus from Nevşehir Airport runs to Nevşehir city centre (approximately ₺50–80 as of 2026). From Nevşehir, catch a dolmuş to Göreme (₺15–30, 30 minutes). A taxi or private transfer directly from the airport to Göreme costs approximately ₺400–700 as of 2026.
By Bus from Istanbul, Ankara or Other Cities
Overnight bus connections run from Istanbul (approximately 10–12 hours), Ankara (4–5 hours), and other Turkish cities to Nevşehir or Göreme directly. Kamil Koç, Metro Turizm and Göreme Seyahat operate routes. Fares range from approximately ₺500–1,200 depending on company and advance booking. The Göreme Seyahat direct service drops passengers at Göreme otogar (bus station), from where it’s walkable to most accommodation.
Getting Around Within Cappadocia
On Foot from Göreme
Göreme village is the central hub for most visitors, and much of it is walkable. The Göreme Open Air Museum is 1.5 km from the village centre — a 20-minute walk along the main road. Rose Valley trailhead is about 1 km from the bus station; Love Valley trail access points are scattered a little further. For the valleys immediately around Göreme, walking is entirely viable and you’ll see more detail on foot than from a vehicle.
The longer valleys — Uçhisar Castle (5 km), Çavuşin village (5 km), Paşabağ (9 km from Göreme) — are within cycling distance but a stretch on foot. For these, dolmuş or bike hire works best.
Dolmuş (Shared Minibus)
Dolmuş minibuses are the public transport backbone of the region. The main route from Göreme runs toward Avanos (10 km northeast) and another toward Nevşehir via Uçhisar and Çavuşin. Frequency varies by season — expect departures every 30–60 minutes during daylight hours in peak season, less often in winter.

Dolmuş stops are at the Göreme otogar and at key points on the main road. Drivers are generally accommodating about stopping at trailheads or viewpoints if you ask.
ATV Hire
ATV hire is Cappadocia’s signature independent activity — riding quad bikes through the valleys at your own pace, stopping at viewpoints along routes that are only accessible by off-road vehicle.
Hire outlets: Several shops are concentrated along the main road in Göreme, near the bus station. Opening hours are typically 08:00–sunset. A valid driving licence is required; international driving licences are accepted. Most operators require a deposit (₺500–1,000 typically).
Pricing (as of 2026):
- Single ATV, 2-hour hire: approximately ₺600–900
- 4-seater buggy, 2-hour hire: approximately ₺1,200–2,000
- Guided group ATV tour (2 hours with lead guide): approximately ₺900–1,500/person
Routes: Most operators provide a route map covering Rose Valley, Red Valley, and Love Valley lookout points. The tracks are dusty volcanic soil — wearable in spring and autumn; extremely dusty in summer. Sunset timing is worth planning — departing around 2–3 hours before sunset means arriving at Red Valley or Rose Valley viewpoints at the best light.
Operators to note: Cappadocia Outdoor and several unnamed hire shops on the main Göreme strip all offer similar pricing. Compare the vehicle condition and whether a guide option is available before choosing.
Horse Riding
Horse riding through Cappadocia’s valleys is a genuinely different experience from ATVs or walking — slower, quieter, with access to the same valley trails. The Rose Valley route is the most popular for horse riding, as the terrain is gentle and the light in the late afternoon is exceptional.
Operators (Göreme-based):
- Dalton Brothers Horse Riding: One of the most established operators, based just outside Göreme. 1-hour guided valley ride approximately ₺500–700/person (as of 2026); 2-hour sunset ride approximately ₺800–1,200/person. Provides helmets; horses suit mixed experience levels.
- Kirkit Voyage Horse Riding: Longer half-day and full-day options through multiple valleys, approximately ₺1,500–2,500 for half-day. More suitable for confident riders.
Booking is best done in person at the stables or through your accommodation the day before. Sunset rides book out quickly in peak season — April, May, September, and October.
Scooter and Bicycle Hire
Scooter/motorbike hire: Available from several shops in Göreme. A 125cc scooter costs approximately ₺600–900/day as of 2026. Useful for covering more ground than a bicycle — Paşabağ, Çavuşin, and Avanos are easy 20–30 minute rides from Göreme. A Turkish or international driving licence is required. Helmets are provided.
Bicycle hire: Manual bikes are available for approximately ₺300–500/day. The roads between Göreme and Uçhisar have some incline but are manageable. E-bikes are increasingly available (₺600–900/day) and worth the premium given the plateau terrain.
Minibus Day Tours (Green Tour, Red Tour)
The most common way to cover the major sites without the logistics of driving is to join one of the half-day tours sold by every agency in Göreme:
- Red Tour (North Cappadocia): Göreme Open Air Museum, Uçhisar Castle, Paşabağ (Monk’s Valley), Devrent Valley, Çavuşin. Half-day. Approximately ₺600–1,000/person including guide (as of 2026). Entry fees not included.
- Green Tour (South Cappadocia): One underground city, Ihlara Valley section, Selime Monastery, Avanos pottery. Full day. Approximately ₺800–1,500/person including guide, excluding entry fees.
Book at any tour agency in Göreme the night before; pick-up from your accommodation is standard. Entry fees add approximately ₺300–600/person depending on which sites are included.
Private Driver Hire
For maximum flexibility — visiting the underground cities, Ihlara Valley, and a valley on the same day without committing to a group tour schedule — hiring a driver makes sense.
Cost: Approximately ₺1,500–2,500 for a full 8-hour day as of 2026. This is per vehicle (for up to 4–5 people), not per person, making it cost-effective for small groups or families. Confirm what’s included — some drivers quote with fuel, others add it. Entry fees are always separate.
How to arrange: Most hotels and guesthouses can recommend reliable drivers. Alternatively, ask at the Göreme otogar — several drivers operate independently and offer competitive rates.
