Şanlıurfa (locally called Urfa) is the archaeological capital of southeast Turkey and the departure point for Göbekli Tepe - a ceremonial complex of carved limestone pillars dated to approximately 9600–8200 BCE, predating Stonehenge by 6,000 years and the Egyptian pyramids by 7,000 years. The implications for the timeline of human civilisation are still being debated; excavations continue and less than 5% of the site has been uncovered.
Beyond Göbekli Tepe, Urfa is also the traditional birthplace of the Prophet Abraham and home to Balıklıgöl (Abraham’s Pool), a sacred pond of carp that pilgrims visit year-round. The bazaar district - one of the most intact in Turkey - preserves a trading hub that has operated continuously since Assyrian merchant colonies in the 2nd millennium BCE.

For Archaeology
Göbekli Tepe Guided Tour
Göbekli Tepe sits on a ridge 12 km northeast of Urfa. The carved T-shaped limestone pillars - some weighing up to 16 tonnes, decorated with bas-relief foxes, cranes, wild boar, and abstract symbols - were erected by a hunter-gatherer society before the development of agriculture, writing, or metal tools. The guided Göbekli Tepe tour covers the excavated enclosures (A through D are open to visitors under a large protective roof), explains the radiocarbon dating evidence, and discusses current theories about the site’s function.
Duration: 3 hours | Price: From approximately $30 | Includes: Transport, guide, entry | Departure: 09:00 from Urfa city centre
Göbekli Tepe and Karahantepe Full Day
Karahantepe (also called Taş Tepeler) is a newer excavation site 46 km southeast of Göbekli Tepe, dated to the same Neolithic period. The 2021–2023 excavations revealed life-size human torso sculptures carved in situ into bedrock pillars - among the earliest figurative sculpture ever found. This full-day tour covers both sites with an archaeologist guide.
Duration: Full day | Price: From approximately $55 | Includes: Transport, specialist guide, both site entries

For History
Harran Beehive Village Day Trip
Harran, 44 km south of Urfa near the Syrian border, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on Earth - mentioned in Assyrian texts from 2000 BCE and in the Old Testament as where Abraham’s family settled. The characteristic beehive houses (mudbrick domed structures with no internal wood) have been built here for at least 3,000 years. The Harran half-day trip visits the beehive village, the ruined 8th-century Umayyad castle, and the Great Mosque of Harran (first mosque built in Anatolia, 8th century CE, now in ruins).
Duration: 3 hours | Price: From approximately $30 | Includes: Transport, guide
Göbekli Tepe and Harran Combo Tour
The full-day combo is the most popular format for visitors with one day in Urfa: morning at Göbekli Tepe (2.5 hours), lunch in Urfa old city, afternoon at Harran (2 hours). Covers 10,000 years of human history in a single day.
Duration: Full day | Price: From approximately $50 | Includes: Both sites, transport, guide, lunch
