Kalkan is the most quietly elegant resort on the Turkish Mediterranean - a small Ottoman-Greek village built on a hillside above a sheltered harbour, with a restaurant culture that punches well above its size and a surrounding coastline that has more Lycian ruins per kilometre than anywhere else in Turkey. Unlike the larger resort towns of Antalya and Alanya, Kalkan has deliberately stayed small; most of its accommodation is villas rather than hotels, and the town centre is compact enough to walk end-to-end in 15 minutes. The combination of boat trips to Kaş and the Kaş-Kekova route, the Lycian Way hiking trail, and the day-trip circuit to Xanthos, Letoon, and Patara gives Kalkan more activity depth than its size suggests.

For Families and First-Timers
Kalkan Bay and Kaş Boat Trip
The full-day boat trip from Kalkan covers the coastline between Kalkan and Kaş - turquoise water over sunken Lycian sarcophagi, rocky coves with crystal visibility, and the Kaş peninsula where the Greek island of Kastellorizo (Meis) is visible 2 km offshore. The boat visits five or six swimming stops, Kaş harbour for 1.5 hours of exploration, and an afternoon of swimming at Tatli Su (Sweetwater Beach) - a coastal spring where fresh water seeps into the sea, creating an unusual temperature layering.
Lunch is served on board; the boat typically holds 15–25 passengers on a traditional gulet.
Duration: Full day | Price: from approximately €40 | Includes: boat, lunch, swimming stops
Kalkan Sunset Gulet Cruise
The 3-hour sunset cruise tours the Kalkan coast at its most photogenic - the white Ottoman houses catching evening light, the harbour turning gold, and the blue-green water of Kalkan Bay. Meze platters, Turkish tea, and soft drinks on board. Groups of 8–20 on a traditional wooden gulet. Departure approximately 1 hour before sunset.
Duration: 3 hours | Price: from approximately €35 | Includes: boat, meze, drinks
For History and Scenic
Kekova Sunken City and Demre Boat Tour
Kekova Island, 2 hours east of Kalkan by boat, shelters the ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Dolchiste (Simena) - a city that was partially submerged by a series of earthquakes in the 2nd century CE. The underwater ruins (walls, staircases, and mosaic floors) are visible through the clear water from the boat; swimming over the ruins is no longer permitted (they are protected), but the snorkelling stops at the adjacent coves are excellent. At Kale (Simena village), an Ottoman castle sits directly above a Lycian theatre and the ruins of the sunken city.
This full-day Kekova tour from Kalkan by boat or minibus-boat combination covers Üçağız village (the departure point for Kekova), the sunken city boat circuit, Kale village and castle, and Demre (ancient Myra) - where the original Saint Nicholas (Noel Baba) was the Bishop in the 4th century and his church (Noel Baba Kilisesi) still stands with intact 11th-century frescoes.
Duration: Full day | Price: from approximately €55 | Includes: transport, guide, boat, lunch
For Archaeology
Xanthos, Letoon and Patara Lycian Sites Tour
The Xanthos-Letoon UNESCO World Heritage corridor is one of the most significant Lycian archaeological zones in Turkey. Xanthos was the capital of Lycia - a federation of city-states whose democratic political system influenced the constitution of the United States of America. The Harpy Tomb (5th century BCE pillar tomb) and the Inscribed Pillar (containing the longest text in the Lycian language) are the highlights, though the original reliefs are in the British Museum. Letoon was the federal sanctuary of the Lycians - its three temples (Artemis, Apollo, and a Nymphaeum) sit partially waterlogged in a swamp that makes the ruins atmospheric and strange.
This full-day Lycian sites tour from Kalkan visits Xanthos (1.5 hours), Letoon (1 hour), and Patara - the ancient harbour city where Saint Nicholas was born and where Alexander the Great wintered in 333 BCE. Patara’s beach (18 km of undeveloped sand) is a protected loggerhead turtle nesting site.
Duration: Full day | Price: from approximately €60 | Includes: transport, guide, all entries | Letoon note: Bring insect repellent - the swamp produces mosquitoes in summer
For Adventure
Saklikent Gorge and Jeep Safari Day Trip
Saklikent Gorge (50 km northeast of Kalkan) is an 18-km slot canyon with walls 300 metres high at the narrowest point. The first 4 km of the canyon are accessible via a wooden walkway over the river; the subsequent wading section (1.5 km, ankle-to-knee-deep, 6–8°C water) leads to the Pınara-Sidyma canyon zone where swimming holes open between the walls.
This full-day jeep safari and gorge tour uses open-top 4WD for the mountain driving, enters the gorge by foot, and includes lunch at the canyon-mouth restaurant. An optional rafting section on the lower Eşen River (Class II) is offered by the same operator.
Duration: Full day | Price: from approximately €45 | Includes: jeep, guide, lunch | Gorge note: Waterproof sandals essential; provided by the operator or bring your own
For Active Travellers
Kayaking and Snorkelling Tour, Kalkan Coast
The 4-hour kayak and snorkel tour explores the sea caves and rocky headlands of the Kalkan coast from water level - caves and coves inaccessible to larger boats, posidonia seagrass beds with sea turtles (loggerhead and green turtles occasionally pass through the bay), and the sea caves west of Kaputaş beach. A guide leads the group; no experience required.
Duration: 4 hours | Price: from approximately €45 | Includes: kayak, snorkel equipment, guide | Turtle note: Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nest on Kaputaş and Patara beaches; sightings in the bay are possible but not guaranteed
For Beach Lovers
Patara Beach and Ruins Half-Day Trip
Patara Beach is one of the longest undeveloped beaches in the Mediterranean - 18 km of sand with no hotels, no sunbeds, and protected loggerhead nesting. The ruins of Patara (ancient Lycian harbour city, birthplace of Saint Nicholas) sit at the north end: a triumphal arch, a granary, a Roman baths complex, and the 5,000-seat theatre. The combination of significant ruins and pristine beach in the same half-day is unusual.
Duration: Half day | Price: from approximately €30 | Includes: transport, guide | Beach access note: Patara Beach closes from sunset to sunrise during turtle nesting season (May to October) to protect loggerhead nests
Practical Information
Getting to Kalkan: The nearest airport is Dalaman (DLM), 100 km away - approximately 1.5 hours by private transfer. From Kaş: 30 km (30 minutes by minibus). From Fethiye: 80 km (1 hour by minibus, several times daily). Kalkan has no direct bus service; connections typically go via Kaş or Fethiye.
Kaputaş Beach: 7 km east of Kalkan - 187 steps down to a small cove with turquoise water. No facilities beyond a seasonal café. Bring everything you need.
Villa stays: Kalkan’s accommodation is predominantly private villa rentals (particularly popular with British visitors) rather than hotel rooms. This changes the character of the town completely - fewer solo travellers, more family groups.
