Gallipoli is the Dardanelles peninsula where one of WWI’s most devastating campaigns unfolded between April 1915 and January 1916. The Allied landings - involving Australian, New Zealand, British, French, and Ottoman troops - produced over 500,000 casualties before the Allies withdrew. For Australians and New Zealanders, ANZAC Cove and the Gallipoli campaign form the defining national mythology; ANZAC Day (25 April) draws tens of thousands of visitors annually to the dawn ceremony at Lone Pine Cemetery.
The peninsula is now one of Turkey’s most significant historical pilgrimage sites, with 31 cemeteries and memorials spread across 80 kilometres of coastline. The nearest city is Çanakkale, 30 kilometres to the north, which also serves as the base for visiting the ancient city of Troy (40 km south). We have mapped 8 top-rated Gallipoli tours by visitor type.

For ANZAC History and First-Timers
Full-Day Gallipoli Battlefield Tour
The full-day battlefield circuit from Çanakkale covers the eight major memorials and cemeteries on the peninsula in a logical sequence: the Brighton Beach landing site, ANZAC Cove (where the 25 April 1915 landings occurred), Lone Pine Cemetery (the main Australian memorial, with 4,936 Australians commemorated and 1,167 buried), Chunuk Bair (the New Zealand memorial at the highest point the Allies reached), the Turkish Mehmetçik Memorial, Cape Helles (British landing point), and the Çanakkale Martyrs’ Memorial on the Asian shore.
A licensed guide contextualises the campaign: the terrain, the command decisions, the daily reality of trench warfare on a narrow peninsula in summer heat, and why the Dardanelles campaign mattered strategically for the Ottoman and Allied powers.

For History and Archaeology Combined
Gallipoli and Troy Combo Day Trip
Troy - ancient Wilusa, Homer’s Ilium - lies 40 km south of Çanakkale. The archaeological site preserves nine layers of occupation dating from 3000 BCE to 500 CE; Troy VIIa (c.1180 BCE) is the layer most scholars associate with the Trojan War. The replica wooden horse at the entrance is a tourist prop; the excavated layers, the great circuit walls, and the temple site are the genuine attraction.
This combined Gallipoli and Troy day trip covers both sites in one long day from Çanakkale: morning at Gallipoli peninsula (4 hours), afternoon at Troy (2 hours). The guide connects the two militarily - Troy controlled the Dardanelles approach just as Gallipoli did 3,000 years later.
Duration: Full day | Price: From approximately $55 | Includes: Guide, transport, entries to both sites
For Families and Memorial Research
Private Gallipoli Battlefield Tour
The private guided battlefield tour allows custom itineraries for visitors researching specific units or family members. The Gallipoli campaign records are detailed - unit positions, casualty lists, and grave registers are well documented. A private guide can focus the day on specific regiments (Australian Light Horse at The Nek, Wellington Regiment at Chunuk Bair, Lancashire Fusiliers at Cape Helles) and locate graves of named individuals at the 31 cemeteries.
Duration: Full day | Price: From approximately $90 per group | Includes: Private guide, vehicle, all entries
From Istanbul
Gallipoli Day Trip from Istanbul (2-Day)
Istanbul is 280 km from Çanakkale - a 1-hour flight or 4.5-hour bus. The 2-day Gallipoli and Troy tour from Istanbul is the most efficient format for Istanbul-based visitors: departs Istanbul early morning, overnight in Çanakkale, full Gallipoli day on day 2, returns Istanbul evening.
Duration: 2 days / 1 night | Price: From approximately $120 | Includes: Çanakkale overnight, transport, guided battlefield and Troy visits
For Coastal Views
Dardanelles Strait Boat Tour
The Dardanelles boat tour from Çanakkale crosses the strait to Kilitbahir Fortress on the European shore and provides views of both sides of the peninsula from the water - the same approach that Allied warships attempted (and failed) in the February–March 1915 naval campaign before the land invasion. The strait at Çanakkale narrows to 1.2 km; the current runs at 4–5 knots.
Duration: 3 hours | Price: From approximately $25 | Includes: Boat, guide
