Türkiye Travel Advisory: May 2026 Update
The US State Department rates Türkiye at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) as of May 2026. The advisory reflects ongoing terrorism concerns and regional tensions related to the Middle East conflict, but it applies unevenly across the country. The main tourist destinations—Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya, Bodrum, and the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts—are not subject to elevated restrictions and are operating normally.
What is safe to visit
Hotels, restaurants, museums, and tourist sites in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet district, Taksim, and Kadiköy are fully operational. Cappadocia’s balloon tours, cave hotels, and open-air museums are running as usual. The Aegean and Mediterranean resort towns, including Bodrum, Fethiye, and Kas, are open and welcoming visitors.
Turkish Airlines is operating its full international schedule, with normal services to and from Europe, North America, and Asia. Istanbul Airport is fully operational.
Areas to avoid
The US State Department advises against travel within 10 km (6 miles) of Turkey’s borders with Syria and Iraq. Southeast Türkiye, including this border region, carries a Do Not Travel (Level 4) designation due to ongoing armed conflict risk. The US Consulate in Adana was evacuated in March 2026.
Practical safety guidance
- Avoid areas near protests and public demonstrations, which can disrupt transport and access to sites in urban areas.
- The State Department notes heightened anti-US and anti-Western sentiment in some parts of the country. Keeping a low profile and avoiding locations publicly associated with US or Israeli interests is advisable.
- Standard travel insurance policies remain valid for Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the Aegean coast. Check policy exclusions carefully for southeast Türkiye.
- The UK Foreign Office and Australian Smartraveller issue similar guidance: exercise a high degree of caution overall, with specific restrictions near Syrian and Iraqi borders.
Entry requirements
Most nationalities can enter Türkiye with an e-visa, obtainable before departure at evisa.gov.tr. Our Turkey visa guide covers eligibility, costs, and the application process. For a full picture of safety conditions, our Is Turkey safe? guide provides destination-by-destination context.
Travel insurance covering cancellation, medical, and evacuation is strongly recommended for all trips to Türkiye given the current regional situation.
