Çanakkale is not primarily a beach destination — it’s a historical and geographical crossroads. The Dardanelles strait itself is not swimmable (strong currents; commercial and military shipping traffic). But the surrounding region has good beaches: Bozcaada island has some of the clearest water on the Turkish Aegean; the Gulf of Edremit to the south is a well-developed summer resort area; and the Aegean coast south toward Assos has several quieter bays.

The Çanakkale waterfront on the Dardanelles is a promenade rather than a swimming beach — the strait has strong currents (historically famous; ships need engine power to navigate it), active shipping traffic, and is not suitable for recreational swimming. Do not swim in the Dardanelles.

Bozcaada island beaches

Bozcaada is the best beach destination accessible from Çanakkale — the island’s western shore has several sandy and pebbly beaches with exceptionally clear Aegean water.

Akvaryum (Aquarium) beach: Named for the water clarity — a pebble beach on the western shore with snorkelling conditions. No sunbed infrastructure; pack your own equipment.

Sulubahçe beach: One of the sandier beaches on the western coast. Some sunbed infrastructure in season.

Ayazma beach: A sandy beach with more development — sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach café.

Bozcaada town beach: Small and easily reached from the town harbour — good for a morning swim before the ferry back.

Getting there: Ferry from Geyikli (30km southwest of Çanakkale) to Bozcaada harbour — 1 hour. ₺80–120 return. Geyikli by dolmuş or taxi from Çanakkale (₺60–100, 40 minutes). Bicycles can be hired on the island for ₺100–200/day to reach the western beaches (5–8km from the harbour).

Water quality: Excellent — Bozcaada is surrounded by open Aegean, away from any coastal industrial activity. The clarity is comparable to the best Aegean beaches.

Sunbed cost: Free at the undeveloped beaches; ₺80–150 at the developed Ayazma section.

Geyikli coast

The Geyikli area (the ferry port for Bozcaada) has some accessible beaches along the coastal road:

Geyikli village beach: Basic facilities; local character. Functional rather than particularly attractive.

Dalyan beach (near Çanakkale): 15km south of Çanakkale on the Aegean coast — a sandy beach with some development. ₺60–100 sunbeds. Accessible by dolmuş (₺15–20, 20 minutes).

Gulf of Edremit (south of Çanakkale)

The Gulf of Edremit is 150–200km south of Çanakkale — a well-developed summer resort area on the southern Aegean, with the towns of Edremit, Burhaniye, Erdek, and Ayvalık. This is a major Turkish domestic tourism destination: olive groves backing sandy beaches, clear Aegean water, and a more protected bay than the open Aegean.

Ayvalık: The most distinctive town in the Gulf of Edremit area — a well-preserved Greek-heritage town (stone buildings, cobblestone streets) with good beaches on the nearby islands and coast. Excellent olive oil (the Ayvalık olive is one of Turkey’s most prized). Ferry connections to the Greek island of Lesbos (Mytilini).

Sarımsaklı beach (Ayvalık): A 7km sandy beach south of Ayvalık — one of the best long sandy beaches in the northern Aegean region.

Transport from Çanakkale: Bus from Çanakkale to Ayvalık (3–4 hours, ₺100–150). Better as an overnight destination than a day trip.

Assos coast

The Assos area (80km south of Çanakkale) has small bays and beaches below the temple cliff — rocky coves with clear water, accessible by walking or local boat.

Behramkale harbour beach: A small pebble beach at the bottom of the village — better for swimming than a full beach day. The harbour restaurants serve fresh fish above.

Bay coves: Several small coves accessible by the coastal road south of Assos — undeveloped, clear water, limited infrastructure.

Practical information

Best season: June–September for warm water and beach conditions. The Dardanelles area has a short spring — water temperature reaches swimming level in late May; it stays warm through October.

Dardanelles currents warning: The Dardanelles current flows toward the Marmara at significant speed. Never swim in the strait itself — the currents are dangerous and the shipping traffic is active 24 hours.

Bozcaada logistics: Plan the ferry times before going — the last ferry from Bozcaada to Geyikli in summer is approximately 8pm (check current schedule). Missing the last ferry means an overnight on the island.

Getting around the coast: A rental car is the most flexible way to reach Çanakkale’s beaches — compare rates at GetRentacar before booking direct. Alternatively, browse tours and activities in Çanakkale for boat trips and excursions that reach spots inaccessible by road.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best beaches near Çanakkale?
Bozcaada island has the clearest water and best beaches near Çanakkale — Ayazma beach on the southern coast is the island's most popular. On the mainland, Geyikli (the ferry port for Bozcaada) has a functional beach; Babakale at the southwestern tip has a small harbour beach. The Gulf of Edremit coast further south (Altınoluk, Akçay) has longer sandy beaches but is a 1.5 to 2-hour drive.
Is swimming possible from Çanakkale city itself?
The Dardanelles strait in front of Çanakkale city is not suitable for swimming — strong currents, heavy shipping traffic, and cold water temperatures make it impractical. The city is best used as a base for day trips to Bozcaada or the Geyikli beaches. The Dardanelles current is powerful enough that Leander's legendary swim across it (and Byron's 1810 re-enactment) are remembered as notable achievements.
When is the best time to visit Bozcaada beaches?
June to September for swimming — water temperatures reach 22–25°C in July and August. The island's beaches are quietest in June and late September. July–August brings Turkish domestic tourists; accommodation fills on weekends. The island closes down substantially from November to April — most pensions and restaurants operate seasonally. The September grape harvest period combines good swimming weather with the wine festival.
