Things To Do in Afyonkarahisar: Spas, Castles, Mosques and Marble

Afyonkarahisar packs a surprising range of experiences into a mid-sized Anatolian city. The thermal spas are the headline act — Turkey’s highest concentration of geothermal resort hotels sits in the Ömer-Gecek district just south of the city — but the 226-metre volcanic rock crowned by a Seljuk-Byzantine castle, the Ottoman mosques, a museum dedicated entirely to marble, and the best lokum (Turkish delight) and sucuk (cured sausage) in the country all make a strong case for staying longer than a single night.

Afyon Castle (Afyonkarahisar Kalesi)

The black volcanic rock that gives the city its name — kara hisar means “black fortress” — looms above every street and demands to be climbed. The castle at the summit is a composite of Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman construction, the oldest sections dating to the 9th century BC when it served as a Phrygian citadel.

The climb takes roughly 30–40 minutes via 700 steps cut directly into the rock. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun in summer; the views over the terracotta rooftops and plains beyond are at their best in the hour before sunset. The castle walls and towers are freely explorable once you reach the top — there is no single gated entrance, and most visitors wander the perimeter taking photographs of the surrounding Afyon plain.

Ulu Mosque (Afyon Ulu Camii)

Built in 1272 under the Germiyanids and one of the finest examples of Anatolian Seljuk wooden architecture in Turkey, the Ulu Mosque is a five-minute walk from the main bazaar. The interior is extraordinary: 40 wooden columns support the roof, each carved from a single piece of timber and topped with hand-carved muqarnas capitals. The carved wooden minbar (pulpit) dates to the same era and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of 13th-century Islamic woodwork in Anatolia.

Afyonkarahisar Museum (Afyon Müzesi)

The city’s archaeology and ethnography museum holds Phrygian, Hellenistic and Roman artefacts excavated from sites across the Afyon province, including marble reliefs from ancient Aizanoi (Çavdarhisar) and Phrygian fibulae and ceramics. The ethnography section covers Ottoman-era textiles, opium cultivation (Afyon means “opium” — the region was a major poppy-growing centre through the Ottoman period) and local craft traditions.

Marble Museum (Mermer Müzesi)

Afyonkarahisar is Turkey’s marble capital — the province accounts for roughly 35% of Turkey’s total marble output and the stone is exported across Europe and the Middle East. The Marble Museum, operated by the Afyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, explains the extraction, cutting and finishing process through scale models and working machinery demonstrations. It is a niche attraction but surprisingly engaging, and the gift shop sells small marble objects at reasonable prices (bowls from approximately 80 TL, chess sets from 250 TL as of 2026).

Thermal Spas

Most thermal experiences in Afyon are attached to the resort hotels in Ömer-Gecek (8km south of the city), but several hotels sell day-use thermal access to non-guests.

Ikbal Thermal Hotel offers day-use access to its indoor thermal pools and hammam from approximately 350 TL per person (as of 2026), including use of changing rooms and towels. The mineral-rich geothermal water reaches 45–50°C at source and is cooled to bathing temperature (38–42°C) in the pools. The water is high in calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, and the hotel’s medical spa offers additional treatments (mud wraps from 280 TL, full-body thermal mud massage from 450 TL) — book these in advance on weekends.

Korel Thermal Resort similarly offers day-use packages from approximately 400 TL including access to its Olympic-size thermal pool complex. The Korel complex is the largest in the region and more suited to families, with shallow sections and a waterpark element operating in summer.

For a more traditional experience, the Çetin Karakaya Hamamı in the city centre (Mısri Mahallesi, a 15-minute walk from the castle) is a functional neighbourhood hammam with male and female sections, kese (exfoliation) and soap massage from approximately 150 TL total — no thermal water, but a genuine local bathhouse experience without the resort price tag.

Lokum and Sucuk Shopping

Afyon lokum is not the tourist-trap variety sold in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. The city’s confectioners use a higher ratio of real fruit and nut to sugar, and the texture is firmer and less cloying. The main lokum street is Uzunçarşı Caddesi in the old bazaar quarter, where a dozen family-run shops compete for your business.

İkbal Lokum (Uzunçarşı No. 42) has been operating since 1959 and is the best-known name — their plain pistachio lokum (approximately 180 TL per 500g) and rose-water variety (approximately 160 TL per 500g) are reliably consistent. Afyon Lokumları (Uzunçarşı No. 18) is a close rival with slightly lower prices and a more extensive range of regional varieties.

For sucuk, the cured beef sausage seasoned with cumin and black pepper that Afyon produces in quantity for markets across Turkey, head to the covered market (Kapalıçarşı) off Milli Egemenlik Caddesi. Afyon Sucukçusu (Kapalıçarşı, Stall 12) sells vacuum-packed sucuk suitable for bringing home; expect to pay approximately 200–250 TL per kilo depending on cut and fat content (as of 2026). Most vendors will let you taste before buying.

Getting Around Afyon

The city centre is walkable — the castle, Ulu Mosque, museum and bazaar are all within 1.5km of each other. For the Marble Museum and Ömer-Gecek thermal district, take a dolmuş from the otogar or arrange a taxi through your hotel. Afyon has an active dolmuş network that covers most destinations, with fares typically 15–25 TL per ride.

The otogar (bus station) is 2km north of the city centre; a taxi from the otogar to the central hotels costs approximately 60–80 TL. Afyon is not served by direct high-speed rail, but intercity buses connect it to Istanbul (from approximately 350 TL, 3.5–4 hours), Ankara (from approximately 200 TL, 2.5–3 hours) and Izmir (from approximately 280 TL, 3 hours).
