Istanbul Airport (IST) handled 289,732 passengers on 9 August 2026, setting a new European record for single-day passenger numbers. The previous record — also held by Istanbul Airport — was 289,260 passengers, set just over a week earlier on 1 August. The airport has now broken its own European benchmark twice in the same month.

Context: A Sustained Peak

The back-to-back records reflect the sustained scale of Istanbul’s summer 2026 traffic. The airport reported 39.92 million total passengers for the first half of 2026, putting it on course to exceed last year’s full-year total well before December.

Istanbul Airport opened in 2018 and reached its current operating scale ahead of schedule. It now handles flights to over 300 destinations across more than 120 countries, positioning it as one of the most connected hubs in the world and the single busiest airport in Europe by daily throughput during peak summer periods.

What This Means for Travellers

High passenger volumes at Istanbul Airport in August mean the terminal can feel crowded, particularly in the landside departure zone and security queues during morning and evening peaks. The airport’s facilities are substantial — the main terminal covers approximately 1.4 million square metres — but wait times at passport control and security can extend during surges.

Travellers transiting through IST should factor in a minimum of two to three hours between connecting flights, especially on busy summer days. Turkish Airlines operates the majority of connections from this hub.

Getting to and from Istanbul Airport

IST is located approximately 35 to 45 kilometres northwest of the city centre, off the O-7 motorway. Metro Line M11 connects the airport to Gayrettepe station, from where passengers can transfer to Metro Line M2 for Taksim and onwards. Journey time to the city centre is around 40 minutes by metro.

Private transfers and taxis are available directly from the airport. Our Istanbul Airport transfer guide covers all ground transport options with current costs and journey times.
