Istanbul is hosting the UEFA Europa League Final on Wednesday 20 May 2026, with Aston Villa FC taking on SC Freiburg. The match is being staged at Beşiktaş Stadium, and the city is expected to see significant visitor numbers over the preceding days as travelling supporters arrive from England and Germany.

If you are in Istanbul this week for reasons unrelated to the football, there are practical things worth knowing.

Accommodation and transport

Hotel availability around Beşiktaş, Taksim, and Karaköy will be limited and prices elevated through at least 21 May. If you have not yet confirmed accommodation, check availability across a wider area — Sultanahmet, Üsküdar on the Asian side, and Kadıköy all offer good public transport links into the centre and may have more options at shorter notice.

The metro network, trams, and the Marmaray tunnel line between the European and Asian sides of the city typically handle large event crowds well, but expect delays on the match day itself, particularly on lines serving Beşiktaş. The Bosphorus ferry services will also be busier than usual. We cover routes and transport options in our getting around Türkiye guide.

Sightseeing around the match period

Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, Topkapı Palace, and the Bosphorus cruise terminals are all in Sultanahmet and Eminönü — a 20-30 minute tram ride from the stadium area. These sites are unlikely to be directly affected by match-day crowds. If you are planning a day trip to Cappadocia or the coast during this period, the main airports at İstanbul (IST and SAW) may see higher passenger volumes mid-week.

May is excellent timing regardless

Temperatures in Istanbul in late May average 18–22°C, making it one of the more comfortable times to explore the city on foot. The bosphorus cruises, Princes’ Islands day trips, and the historic peninsula all benefit from the clear skies typical of this time of year. Visa reminder

Most European and North American passport holders use the Turkish e-Visa, applied for online before departure. Australian passport holders gained visa-free entry to Türkiye under a presidential decree issued on 17 April 2026 — no pre-arrival application required for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day window. Full details are in our Turkey visa guide.
