Istanbul Tulip Festival

Every April, Istanbul plants over 30 million tulip bulbs across more than 60 parks and public spaces throughout the city. The festival has been running since 2006, organised by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and has grown into one of the largest tulip displays anywhere in the world. Entry to all participating parks is free throughout April.

Why Tulips in Istanbul

The connection between tulips and Istanbul is historically deep. The Ottoman Empire was cultivating tulips in elaborate garden displays centuries before the flower became associated with the Netherlands — the bulbs travelled west from Turkey in the 16th century, and the word “tulip” itself derives from the Turkish word for turban. The Istanbul Tulip Festival is partly a celebration of that Ottoman horticultural heritage.

The Best Parks to Visit

Emirgan Park on the European shore of the Bosphorus is the festival’s centrepiece and the most photographed location. It covers around 47 hectares and is planted with hundreds of tulip varieties in carefully arranged colour patterns. The park also has historic Ottoman pavilions (the Yellow, Pink, and White Köşk) that serve as cafes during April. Arrive on weekday mornings to avoid weekend crowds.

Other notable locations include Gülhane Park adjacent to Topkapi Palace (where the display includes the park’s historic rose gardens as a backdrop), Yildiz Park in Besiktas, and Maçka Park near Taksim. Each park has a slightly different character and planting scheme, so visiting more than one is worthwhile if you have the time.

When to Go

Peak bloom typically falls in the second and third weeks of April, though this varies by a week or so depending on winter temperatures. The municipality publishes bloom updates on the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality website as April progresses. If you are travelling specifically for the tulips, plan for mid-April rather than the first or last week of the month.

Getting There

Emirgan Park is on the 25E and 22 bus routes from Besiktas, taking approximately 25 minutes. A taxi or ride-share from central Istanbul (Taksim) takes around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. Gülhane Park is directly adjacent to the Gülhane tram stop on the T1 line.

Practical Tips

April weekends at Emirgan can be extremely crowded, particularly on sunny days. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning if your schedule allows. The park has several cafe pavilions selling tea, snacks, and light meals. Bring comfortable shoes — the park is hilly and the paths can be uneven. A light jacket is useful for the mornings; midday temperatures in April average 15-18°C.
