International Istanbul Music Festival

The International Istanbul Music Festival has been running every June since 1973, making it one of the longest-established classical music festivals in Europe. Organised by IKSV (Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts), the festival runs throughout June and brings together orchestras, chamber ensembles, soloists, and conductors from across the world for performances in some of Istanbul’s most architecturally extraordinary spaces.

The Venues

The venue selection is a defining characteristic of the festival and a major reason to attend even for those who are not regular classical concertgoers. Hagia Irene (Aya Irini), a Byzantine church within the Topkapi Palace grounds dating to the 4th century, is the flagship performance space — its stone interior and remarkable acoustics make for an exceptional concert experience. Other venues have included the Atatürk Cultural Centre (AKM) on Taksim Square (reopened in 2021 after extensive renovation), Besiktas’ Barbaros Park for open-air performances, and various historic halls across the city.

The festival programme spans orchestral concerts, recitals, opera productions, and chamber music. Past editions have featured leading ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and London Symphony Orchestra, alongside major Turkish ensembles and emerging artists. Tickets go on sale several months before the festival opens, with early booking strongly advised for performances at Hagia Irene, which has limited capacity. June is warm in Istanbul, with average highs of 26-28°C, so plan for summer-weight clothes during the day. Evening performances in Hagia Irene can be cooler due to the thick stone walls — a light layer is worth carrying. The Topkapi Palace grounds close to general visitors by early evening, but concert ticket holders enter via a dedicated gate.
