Istanbul Film Festival

The Istanbul International Film Festival (IFF) has been running since 1982, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV). It is Turkey’s most significant film event and one of the most established festivals in the region, typically screening over 200 films from around 50 countries across two weeks each April. Films compete in the national and international feature competitions, while parallel sections focus on documentary, short film, and world cinema.

Programme and Screenings

The festival runs for approximately two weeks in mid-to-late April. The main competition sections include the International Competition, the National Competition for Turkish films, and a dedicated section for Turkish short films. Alongside these, the programme includes retrospectives, thematic sidebar programmes, and masterclass talks with visiting directors and producers.

Films are screened at several cinemas across Istanbul, primarily in the Beyoglu district — the Atlas Cinema, Beyoglu Sanat Cinema, and venues around Istiklal Avenue are regular festival sites. The full programme is published on the IKSV website (film.iksv.org) around two to three weeks before opening night.

Tickets and Accreditation

Individual screening tickets can be purchased online via the IKSV website or at venue box offices. Prices in recent editions have been in the range of 80-120 TRY per screening for the general public, with discounts for students and IKSV members; confirm current pricing on the official site. Festival passes covering multiple screenings are also available and represent better value for anyone planning to attend more than a few films.

Press and industry accreditation is handled separately through the IKSV accreditation portal, with applications typically opening in January.

Getting There and Around

All major festival venues are in Beyoglu, accessible via the F1 funicular from Kabatas to Taksim Square or the T1 tram to Kabatas followed by the funicular. What to Expect

The atmosphere at IFF is noticeably different from commercial cinema — queues form early for anticipated screenings, particularly for Turkish competition films, and post-screening discussions are common. English subtitles are available on most international films; Turkish films in competition typically have English subtitles as well, though it is worth checking individual listings.

April is one of the better times to visit Istanbul — mild temperatures (15-20°C), the tulip festival in the parks, and the film festival running concurrently make for a particularly good combination if you enjoy both urban culture and cinema.
