Hıdrellez Spring Festival

Hıdrellez (also written Hıdırellez) is one of Turkey’s oldest living folk festivals, celebrated on 5-6 May each year to mark the arrival of spring. The name combines the names of two Islamic prophets — Hızır and Ilyas (Elijah) — who according to tradition meet on earth each year on this night. The festival blends Islamic symbolism with much older Anatolian and Balkan spring rites, and versions of it are observed across Turkey, the Balkans, and Central Asia.

The Rituals and Their Meaning

The central traditions of Hıdrellez revolve around wishes, renewal, and abundance. In the days leading up to 5 May, people write wishes on slips of paper, tie them to rose branches, or place small handmade objects representing their desires — a model house for those hoping to move, a toy for those wishing for children — near rose bushes or in gardens overnight. The belief is that Hızır passes through in the night and may grant these requests.

On the evening of 5 May, communities gather in parks and open spaces to light bonfires. Jumping over the flames is considered purifying and luck-bringing. Folk music groups play, people dance the halay (a traditional circle dance), and food is shared communally. The celebration continues into the morning of 6 May.

Where to Celebrate in Istanbul

The most prominent Hıdrellez event in Istanbul takes place at Ahırkapı, a neighbourhood on the historic peninsula’s waterfront in the Sultanahmet district. The Ahırkapı celebrations have a particularly strong Roma community character, with Roma musicians playing traditional Romani music (often called Roman havası in Turkish) and large crowds gathering from late afternoon. The event is free and open to all.

Gülhane Park and various districts across Istanbul also hold their own smaller celebrations. If you are spending the night of 5 May in Istanbul, it is worth checking local listings for neighbourhood events — they are often more intimate than the Ahırkapı gathering.

Hıdrellez is a participatory festival rather than a performance — you are welcome to join the dancing, write a wish, or simply watch the bonfire. Dress comfortably and in layers; May evenings in Istanbul can still be cool, especially near the water. The atmosphere is warm and inclusive, and the music alone — particularly at Ahırkapı — makes the evening worth attending even without understanding the cultural context in detail.
