The Alanya International Triathlon has been one of Europe’s premier multisport events since 1993, consistently ranked among the top Olympic-distance triathlons in the world. Held on the first weekend of October, it attracts around 1,500 athletes from 60-plus countries who come to compete on a course that combines the Mediterranean’s warm waters, coastal roads flanked by the Taurus Mountains, and a finish line on Cleopatra Beach.

What Happens and When

The event runs across two days. Saturday typically hosts the sprint-distance race (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run), while Sunday is reserved for the Olympic-distance (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run). Both races start with an open-water swim in Alanya Bay, directly off Cleopatra Beach. Water temperatures in early October average around 24-26°C, making for comfortable conditions even for less experienced open-water swimmers.

The bike course heads along the D400 coastal highway, a well-surfaced road that rolls through citrus groves and past fishing villages. The run finishes back on the beach promenade, where spectators line the route from start to finish.

Elite categories run under ITU/World Triathlon rules, with age-group waves following. Check the official Alanya Triathlon website for exact start times, as the schedule adjusts slightly each year based on total athlete count.

Practical Information for Athletes

Registration opens roughly nine months before race day and sells out well in advance for the Olympic distance. Entry fees as of recent editions have been in the range of EUR 100-130 for the Olympic distance, though prices should be confirmed at registration. All athletes must hold a valid ITU or national federation license, or purchase a day license at check-in.

The race village and expo are located near the beach, within walking distance of most accommodation in central Alanya. Transition zones open at 05:30 on race morning, with mandatory bike check-in the day before.

Getting There and Where to Stay

Alanya is served by Gazipasa Airport (GZP), roughly 45 minutes east of the town centre. Antalya Airport (AYT) is a larger hub about two hours west and handles more international connections. Bus and shuttle services connect both airports to Alanya.

Most athletes stay in the beach hotels along Cleopatra Beach or Keykubat Beach, which puts you within easy reach of the transition area. Book well ahead — the event fills hotels fast. For more on getting around Alanya, see our city guide.

Spectator Tips

Spectators can watch the swim start and finish on Cleopatra Beach for free. The promenade run section also makes for good viewing with no access restrictions. If you want a vantage point for the bike course, the area around the Alanya castle rock gives a clear line of sight down to the highway.

Bring sunscreen even in October — midday temperatures routinely reach 28-30°C. The beach bars along the finish stretch serve food and drinks throughout race day, so there is no shortage of places to wait between waves.
