The Rize coast shares the character of the eastern Black Sea shore — pebble beaches rather than sand, darker water than the Aegean, cooler temperatures, and the dramatic backdrop of tea plantations cascading down the hillsides to the coast road. Beach swimming is possible and practiced by locals, but Rize is not visited for its beaches. We include this guide for those already in Rize who want to know what swimming options exist along this stretch of coast.
Rize city beach (İslampaşa)
The main beach immediately below the city centre — a pebble shore backed by the coast road and the city park. This is the most accessible swimming spot in the province, used primarily by local families in July and August.
Beach type: Coarse pebble and shingle. Water shoes are recommended — the stones are uneven and can be uncomfortable underfoot.
Facilities: Basic — a small changing area, a few seasonal tea vendors on the promenade above. There is no sunbed or umbrella rental infrastructure as of 2026. Public toilets are available in the adjacent city park.
Water quality: Generally clean. The Black Sea here has a distinctive dark blue-green colour, quite different from the turquoise of the Mediterranean coast. The contrast between the dark green tea hillsides directly above and the dark water below creates an unusual visual combination that is specific to this coastline.
Access: Walk from the city centre in approximately 10 minutes. The Rize coastal promenade runs along the shore and is a pleasant walk even when swimming is not practical.
Best time: July and August only — water temperature reaches approximately 20–23°C in peak summer. Outside these months, the water is too cold for casual swimming.
Pazar beach (25km east)
The town of Pazar, approximately 25km east of Rize along the coast road, has a broader pebble shore than central Rize and slightly better beach conditions. The beach stretches for several hundred metres and is popular with residents of the surrounding villages during summer weekends.
Beach type: Mixed pebble and coarse sand — slightly more comfortable than Rize city beach. Some sections have finer gravel that approaches sand.
Facilities: Local tea houses and small restaurants along the road behind the beach. A few seasonal snack vendors in July and August. No formal beach infrastructure.
Transport: Dolmuş from Rize otogar (approximately ₺15–20, 30 minutes as of 2026). Services run frequently during daylight hours. The coast road is scenic — tea plantations on the hillside side, the Black Sea on the other.
Swimming conditions: Similar water temperature to Rize city. The beach faces north into the Black Sea, so waves can be stronger than on sheltered Mediterranean coves. On calm days, the swimming is pleasant if cold.
Ardeşen beach (30km east)
Ardeşen, approximately 30km east of Rize, has a beach used by local families throughout the summer. The Ardeşen River mouth creates a mixed freshwater-sea swimming zone that is popular in the warmer months, though the river can make the water colder than the open sea.
Beach type: Pebble with some coarse sand near the river mouth. The beach is functional rather than scenic, backed by the town rather than open landscape.
River swimming: The Ardeşen River itself has several swimming holes upstream that locals use in summer — these are colder than the sea (fed by mountain snowmelt) but surrounded by forest. Ask locally for directions to the best spots, as they are not signposted.
Transport: Dolmuş from Rize (approximately ₺20–30, 35 minutes as of 2026).
Facilities: Basic — town restaurants and shops are a short walk from the beach. The Ardeşen town market (Wednesday) is worth combining with a beach visit.
Çayeli beach (20km west)
The town of Çayeli, west of Rize, has a small pebble beach that is used by local residents. The beach is less visited than Pazar or Ardeşen and has minimal facilities, but the setting is quiet and the water quality is good.
Transport: Dolmuş from Rize (approximately ₺15–20, 25 minutes). The town itself is a tea-processing centre and has several tea factories that can be visited.

Safety and practical notes
Currents: The Black Sea has stronger currents than the enclosed Mediterranean. Rize’s beaches are relatively sheltered by the coastal geography, but undertow can occur, particularly after storms. Swim close to shore and be cautious if the sea appears rough.
Weather: Rize receives approximately 2,300mm of rainfall annually — one of the highest in Türkiye. The coast is frequently overcast even in summer, and rain can arrive quickly. Clear-sky beach days are less reliable than on the drier southern coasts. Check the forecast before planning a beach day.
Water shoes: We strongly recommend water shoes for all Rize beaches. The pebbles range from smooth to sharp, and the transition from beach to water is uncomfortable without protection.
Beach season: Rize’s beach season is shorter than the Aegean and Mediterranean — the sea reaches swimming temperature in July and cools quickly by September. Even in peak summer, afternoon temperatures may drop enough to make beach time less comfortable than on the south coast.
Honest assessment
The Rize coast is not a beach destination by any reasonable definition. The Aegean coast (Bodrum, Çeşme, Alaçatı) and the Mediterranean (Antalya, Kaş, Fethiye) offer dramatically better beach experiences. If beach swimming is a priority for your trip, those regions are the right choice.
Rize’s appeal is the tea landscape, the Kaçkar Mountains, the Fırtına Valley, and the Black Sea food culture. The beaches are an incidental option on hot summer days — worth knowing about if you are already here, but not a reason to visit.

Getting around the coast: A rental car is the most flexible way to reach Rize’s beaches — compare rates at GetRentacar before booking direct. Alternatively, browse tours and activities in Rize for boat trips and excursions that reach spots inaccessible by road.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Rize have beaches?
- Rize's coastline is primarily rock and shingle rather than sand — the Black Sea coast here is steep, and the rivers running down from the Kaçkar deposit pebbles and coarse gravel rather than fine sand. Functional swimming spots exist at Rize city's İslampaşa beach and at the pebble beaches east and west of the city. The water is clean but cold by Aegean standards (16–20°C in summer). The Rize coast is not a beach destination — the mountain landscape and tea country are the reasons to visit.
- Is the Black Sea cold for swimming near Rize?
- Yes, substantially colder than the Aegean or Mediterranean. Sea temperature near Rize reaches approximately 18–22°C in July and August — cold enough that casual beach use is limited to the hottest weeks. The Black Sea is also less saline than the Mediterranean (it receives a large freshwater input from rivers), which makes it slightly less buoyant. Swimming is possible in summer but is not a primary reason to visit Rize.
- Are there better beaches west of Rize along the Black Sea?
- The Black Sea coast becomes slightly more beach-friendly toward Giresun and Ordu (3–4 hours west of Rize), where some sandy stretches exist. The Çambaşı plateau area (near Ordu) has a different character — more alpine than coastal. For serious beach tourism, the eastern Black Sea is not the right coast; the Aegean and Mediterranean are significantly better. The eastern Black Sea is the right destination for landscape, food, tea, and mountain access.
